Anybody use them? Crappie love them and they are hardier than reglar fathead in a tank. [Linked Image]

You can produce literal.million of rosy red minnows and regular colored fathead minnows if you put a few in a shallow, unpopulated pond and put a bunch of pallets, with rocks or cinder blocks on them, to sink them. The minnows will.spawn on the pallets nearly continuously, while the weather is warm.

My favorite aquarium fish are little tiny sunnies of all type. Feed them the shrimp and watch them eat......jk

I loved keeping those small wild colourful sail fins, sword tails, and those Rosies would be pretty. Not 1,000 though, Gary !

I used to catch them out of the lakes with a dippy net and keep them in my large aquariums. The wild ones were as fun and colourful for me as any others I would buy from the stores.

You can buy rosy red minnows and regular fathead minnows at most fish hatcheries, very, very cheaply. Many counties have fish sales, for stocking ponds, that sell minnows very cheaply too.

Freshwater Farms of Ohio, which is near me, sells fathead minnows for $60.00 per half gallon or $106.00 gallon. That comes out to about $60.00 per 1250 and $106.00 per 2500 adult fathead minnows. That comes out to less than 5 cents each for 1250 and about 4 cents each for 2500 adult fathead minnows. That's 60 cents and 48 cents per dozen.

I watched a bait trapper dip out 30 gallons out of one trap, they own a bait store also and you get a scoop, about a hundred, for four bucks.

I got these from a local bait shop (Pawnee City) that got them somewhere around Kansas City.
These are a bit big for smaller crappie but they manage to get them in their mouth.

I believe baitrunners around Brookings raises them. In the past anyways.
$4 bucks buys a dozen here!

Here in NE the wardens like you to have a receipt for baitfish to avoid creek bait getting carp in lakes.

$.20 each at petsmart.

Does anyone know how many it would take to stock a small pond 50'×50' and when would a guy stock them? (It freezes in the winter)

Fathead minnows begin spawning at 64F, so I would put them in as your water is getting in the upper fifties. Females spawn 16 to 26 times per season. They lay 6,800 to 10,600 eggs each per season. It takes about 4 months to become sexually mature. A very few breeders will fill a 50' by 50' pond by the end of the Summer. The more breeders you put in, the quicker the population will grow. A half gallon of stocked fathead minnows would very quickly give you a heavily harvestable population.
