Setting 330s for beaver...wire ties...

Setting 330s for beaver...wire ties... - 02/03/24 06:24 AM

Watched a bunch of u-tube videos and many of the folks just set 330s and don't tie them off ? I am old school, grumpy and hate wasting money on throwing things away. Why in tarnation would anybody set a trap and leave it unattached ? I have been known to run 2 wires out to different solid connections because I did not trust the first tie off. Wire seems cheap to me compared to an otter or beaver wearing my trapping jewelry for the rest of their lives. Why is this showing up on so many videos ? Rant completed !

Never heard of such a thing. Can't understand not anchoring or tying off, unless there staking the trap through the support stick.
Are they stating that they don't need to anchor the trap?

The answer is simple. YouTube is full f people that THINK they know what they’re doing.

I have seen it with new guys, abeaver gets caught and takes off and they say the trap was stolen. Later you will see it floating with the trap on it.

I anchor all my traps for the largest animal around so to speak. I lost a marten trap last year and am still thinking it was a two legged type of animal.

I don'i even trust wire on my bodygrips. Each one wears a length of cable with a swivel.

Never would not attach to something. I have had them walk away with a beaver in them. Black bears can carry them off even when they are attached good enough in a normal situation.

Otter and wire don't get along well.

really good point, earlier this fall i set two 330's and both were wired off. the beaver in the first trap was dead, but my second trap was missing. as i am loading my boat i look over in much deeper water and see what looks to be a log..... but it was my trap and a huge beaver! in chest deep water..... i found it by accident! i just figured someone stole my trap. the beaver somehow, probably when first caught pushed my wire over 4 feet of secure, live limb and swam off a ways.... lesson learned, secure those traps...... these animals are powerful!

You don’t have to actually know how to trap anything to start making trapping videos . You just need some video posting skills !

This!
YouTube has some channels featuring guy's who are at the top of their industry and can share wisdom from a lifetime in the fields they work and play. Think Hickock45, Massad Ayub(sp?), or Jerry Miculek.

Then there are going to be a steady stream of guys who don't have anywhere near that level of knowledge but are entertaining. Think Demolition Ranch or that guy in Kentucky who keeps blowing barrels out of 50 calls and .45/70s. And... he isn't the worst! There a big compilations of negligent discharges and about half of them feature firearms instructors.

I myself will continue to tie off and swivel BGs. I've only had a handful of spinners but seeing even one makes a beleiver out of ya.

I have a six foot piece of 1/8” cable attached to all my 330s, with a loop and quick link on the end. I save cable from my 10 foot drowning sliders used with leg grips…..sometimes they’ll get a bad kink or twist in them. I anchor a 330 securely, never had to look for one.

Re: Setting 330s for beaver...wire ties... - 02/03/24 02:10 PM

I used to think that , you really didn't need to worry about securing 330's to well , because they were killer traps ...
Then I lost one , and initially thinking someone stole it ...it was in a runway at a beaver dam set ..
Just by luck , when I was leaving , I noticed some air bubbles under the ice in some deep water ...
When I got a long stick to break the ice and then laying on the bottom was my first ever otter ..
The otter was hip caught and put up some fight ,.. trap was wired , but he broke free ..
Now I use cable , with eyes crimped in and small clevis , or shackles to secure ..

I use wire on all bodygrips and snare tie offs.
All my small bodygrips have a swivel.
I remove cable that comes on the belisles, since cable is not trustworthy like wire.
Kinked wire can easily be seen and changed or re inforced.
You wont know when your cable is rotten inside and lets go.

You might not see cable go bad but you can definitely steel and hear it being bad.

I've got cable on most of mine. Never had a problem with it.

Re: Setting 330s for beaver...wire ties... - 02/03/24 03:59 PM

Best tie off wire is soft annealled wire.
Double 14 ga or single 11 ga for small bodygrips and snares, and 9 ga for big snares for wolf.
All set lethal of course.

I like chain on my 330's. Most people don't like it, but to me wire is used to hold the muffler up on your PU. Other than snare supports I don't use wire trapping.

Re: Setting 330s for beaver...wire ties... - 02/03/24 10:33 PM

Cable rots out from the inside.

I only use it on 330s when I need an extension to the chain on the trap. I use one of my snare extensions. But if I had my druthers I would just put extra chain on the trap. Got 30' feet of chain I need to cut up and put on what I got whenever I find my lost roundtuit.

I use Chain with a swivel and those D clamps. Never have lost one but most of my trapping is on Private land.

I didn’t wire one of mine good enough this year…….5 weeks later he was floating where I could find him. Not a very nice smell when trying to get him out of the trap. Tie off or stake well is my advice.

Stainless cable on everything. Nuff said...

Re: Setting 330s for beaver...wire ties... - 02/04/24 01:23 AM

Quit using wire probably 30 years ago on bodygrips. 1/8” American cable with 2 swivels.
I saw an idiot on their beaver trapping not anchoring 330’s.
Not good.

Re: Setting 330s for beaver...wire ties... - 02/04/24 01:52 PM

Old used snares work just fine for me with a 30 inch rerod stake, not anchoring is just s dumb move it makes no sense. It’s not uncommon for a flavor of the month idea to become popular with newer trappers.

I use cable or chain, and I am switching to chain as I like how it goes into my pickup, I still will carry cable extension as they’re usually behind the seat, I gave up on wire when I bought a roll that was supposed to be soft and they did a poor job as some was hard and brittle and some was soft.
