Traffic Signal trips and timing

Who understands them?

In heavy traffic areas they are on a timer. In more rural areas they may be on a timer OR triggered by a pressure plate. We have a local light that won't change unless a car comes from the direction we want to go, because the pressure plate is on that side of the light.

Mix of both here most are magnetic sensors and when a vehicle stops way behind the light it dosen't trip th signal and they sit for a very long time. Frustrating to be behind somebody who just dosen't get it.

Can a consistent flow of traffic keep, say a left turn arrow green longer than if there is an increased gap between vehicles?

I think some here work that way hobbie.

Memory serves, they taught that in drivers’ ED. They don’t teach that anymore?

When driving through downtown Rapid City 26mph will get you through the green lights.

I see them in KC . Some lights are fast. The slow traffic side only green a few seconds on a timer. Loaded it often changes before I complete the turn.

My favorite is waiting to turn right onto a narrow street. 4 wheeler is sitting there motioning me to come on and turn but I don’t have enough room till they pull out. They are trying to to be nice but just blocking traffic.

I keep my trailer close enough to the curb so speedy gonzales cant pass on the right while I am turning and eat the back of my trailer.

We might be over thinking it Danny. We need to just turn our brain off when we buckle in like everybody else.

Some of us are 6 foot, 3" inches tall and the way they
have engineered the chevy silverado windshields
now-a-days if you pull up tight to the traffic light so you
trip the pressure plate, you are too close & can't see
the traffic signal when it turns green.

So then you have the guy in a big hurry behind you
blaring his horn & road raging at you if you are too
slow on the gas pedal.

Either way you can't win at the traffic light if you are too tall !!!

Has anyone else experienced this challenge/problem ?

Here, it seems most are on a timer, a few magnetics but not as many as years ago. Like said, some are very fast, 2-3 cars and it changes, the thoroughfares are longer, The problem as I see it, the lights are rarely timed to facilitate the flow of traffic, You get a green light, but the next light is still red so nothing moves as it could. I often wonder it traffic engineers rode the short bus to school....

Yes,,so I stay back far enough to still see the light.If no one behind me likes that,,,too bad.

Yes, had to lower the seat and recline it more than my normal position. Felt weird but went away after a week or so.

How does it factor in Karen, sitting at the light, face in her phone, oblivious to the horns blowing behind her, finally waking from her Facebook daze, just in time to.dart threw the last of the yellow light, leaving the rest of us to wait out another red???

I hate people trying to be nice at intersections. If people would just follow right of way rules, things would go a lot smoother. Too many wreck's have happened at an intersection 200yds from my house because they were watching the vehicle opposite them wave them through instead of the traffic and get blasted off the road

I'm surprised no motorcycle operators have chimed in on how difficult it can be at some lights to trigger the sensors under the pavement. I have a couple in my area , no matter how much you try to get the bike over the sensor to trigger it , it doesn't have enough mass or ferrous metal for it to work.

Plus my state has no provision in the law to run the light after a reasonable waiting period. Some smart states do have a provision in their laws.

Yep, I've seen that at several intersections around me when I am riding the bike. Frustrates me to no end, and I avoid those intersections now.

Uncle had some kind of prism deal mounted on his dash for that back in the late 50's. No idea if still available though or what is called.

It's called a stoplight viewing prism. They still sell them mostly for the vintage car crowd. It is a Fresnel lens that reflects the red light of the traffic signal so you can see it without cranking your neck at a weird angle if you are almost under the light.
