Trap tags - 01/24/24 12:03 AM

Are there any paper or similar material trap tags that will last in water? If they are cheap enough it doesn't matter if the survive thru a catch or not. Any ideas on something cheap-ish?

When I was a kid, we'd use old canning lids.

scratch our name on them with a nail, then drive a hole thru them with it.

If a warden checks when you have a catch that ate your name tag, will he care that a catch ate the tag. From what I have seen states that require tags, require tags. No where does it say unless your catch eats it.

That won't happen but if it does, I politely decline.

I only need 10 or so and and you have to pay for 50 at least and I don't know if you know how much $20 is to me but thats 30% of my savings and I need other things too.

You can get 100 engraved for maybe $20. They’ll last you a good long while.

If you buy just what you need, what are you gonna do when one goes missing after a catch? Or if you get more traps?

Re: Trap tags - 01/24/24 03:12 AM

Well I can buy more then. I am by no means a long-liner and have a whoppin' 13 traps and 7 of those aren't actually mine but I use them. Does anyone here engrave them? Maybe I could get someone to engrave them off of TrapShed.

I use trap tags to mark other belongings I own. So extra trap tags definitely won’t be wasted. As you grow your trap line...you’ll need them

Use an awl and scratch it into pieces of canning lids or cans to get by, then call Finch's and get some good ones with your fur money. If you're really that bad off, send me your info and I'll spring for some for you.

I used to cut a pop can open and lay it flat. Then with an old pair of scissors cut. First you can take a nail and scratch your name, address on the metal then cut. Take a nail and poke a hole in the tag to wire on the trap. Not nearly as good as the stamped tag but maybe it will get you going.

Exactly. When I was a kid I scratched many in all sorts of metal.

Get some of the zinc write your own tags until you can buy the copper tags. The zinc ones are $3-$4 for 50 or 100. If you can get them local. If not when you add shipping you may as well get 50 copper tags with free shipping.

For $8 you can get these then you can stamp tags out of more durable metal than a pop can or similar.

copper tooling foil can be found at hobby shops and can be cut with a pair of scissors then stamped .Copper holds up better than aluminum and zinc will disappear on you.
