Fox trap - 01/20/24 09:34 PM

You going Bridger 1.75 or mb450 or old school Montgomery 1.5, Maybe Duke 1.75, or victor 1.75...
Not yote / fox... Straight fox...

What say you?

I really like Duke 1.75s with the wide face offsets as a conventional choice.

450s if going with a premium trap.

Can’t get Victors anymore.

Can I or can I not modify?

Northwoods #1 3/4, Victor #1 1/2, Montgomery #1 1/2 !!! laugh

All these heritage, old stock traps are available
on the used market if you look around a bit.

1.5 Monty round jaw from the 80’s, for early season fox, then #2 Monty’s all winter.

Another vote for Northwoods 1.75 Square Jaw. That's all I've ever used for my southeast PA red fox lines. Spent years buying them off Ebay and other sources. Used ones got new springs and two swivels added to the chains. The occasional New-In-Box finds just had the chains modified slightly.

They are a great fox trap and will hold about any coyote.

They are dang near bullet proof & never had a stink dog dismantle one either !!! laugh

I didn't care for the NW's innovative, in-line shock spring system, though.

Duke 1 1/2

The Duke 1 1/2 will hold fox just great. I see no reason why you'd spend more money.

Another vote for the duke os 1 3/4. I like the offset on the dukes better than the vics. Definitely wider. And they will hold the occasional yote.

MB 450, holds anything and I just love the cast jaws.

Most of my life I used vic 1 1/2's for everything except beaver that I had to trap here

The Bridger 1.75 is the same trap, only better.

I put the shock spring back on them for nostalgia. That's the only part coyotes have destroyed (and a few bent/chewed dogs).

The Bridger 1.75 didn't exist when bought most of my Northwoods. I have a bunch of the older style Bridger # 2's and 3's and they are identical to the Northwoods # 2's and # 3's.

For those that like the NW 1.75s you’ll probably like these too…

How does the build quality of the wolf creek compare to the bridger?

The Wolf Creek is a stout trap. The dog is flimsier for sure. Jaws are a little sharper. The benefits are the jawspread is a little bigger, side swiveling (benefit in some situations), and some like the traditional pan better. Pan is heavier than the Bridger.

Re: Fox trap - 01/20/24 11:59 PM

What brand of trap is that in the video ?

I also like Montgomery 1.5 round jaws and #2's. Seems like coyotes will mess up the dog pretty regular, but a nice little trap.

This guy has it right...If you want a beefier trap - SC 1.75 regular jaw.

Re: Fox trap - 01/21/24 12:37 AM

For the wolfdog.. My favorite fox trap is an old school square jaw Montgomery #2, replace the levers with Bridger 2 levers then full mod them... Holds everything..

Half the reason for the thread is trying to talk myself into old Northwoods 1.5s that I ow rather than sell and upgrade or maybe not an upgrade to Bridger 1.75..

Such a small who gives a care maybe upgrade maybe not that it doesn't matter. Just fun to hear everyone idea..

I'm all in on the Northwoods 1.75s tho.. And own plenty of 1.5 round jaw Montgomery that will never leave my hands..

So what size is a 550 considered? Whatever size it is, go smaller for fox. A 450 would be my choice for nothing but fox, but it will hold plenty of coyotes and bobkitty’s as well.

Re: Fox trap - 01/21/24 01:42 AM

All are good traps but I was always partial to the NW and bridger 1.65 with laminated jaws. I caught a ton of Greys in them and they were just about perfect. No damage and would hold the odd cat that bludered into a fox set.. Good little traps

Jaw spread wise the inside spread of a 550 is no bigger than a 1.75. width wise it is bigger. A 550 is to heavy for grey's on the few I have caught in them. No problem with them on reds. I like the northwoods 1.75 the best for fox and they hold coyotes too. Mine are baseplated and adding lamination shortly.

Re: Fox trap - 01/21/24 02:16 AM

Trap into winter mb550s freeze hard with all their metal in comparison to many others.. Like them a lot the first month of season here but after that forget it...

Anyways mb550 a yote/fox trap. We after just fox trap on this thread for fun...

Re: Fox trap - 01/21/24 02:23 AM

An MB550 is not a fox trap, lol. Not a Grey fox anyways. Go with something smaller. I’ve caught plenty in a 450 that could be released, not so much with a 550.

If a guy was looking for more fox traps. Would you folks go with finding used northwoods or just buy new bridger's?

I haven't held a bridger 1.75.

I would Definitely go with the good, old, American made,
late 1970's Era traps such as Victors & Montgomerys
both for reasons of nostalgia, and the fact they are very
well made traps.

The Northwoods #1 1/2 and #1 3/4 Square Jaws
while they were foreign-made in the Republic of Taiwan
were also a very well made trap in their day.
