Anyone run 160s for otter in the water?

I have caught them in 160's before, yes but there are better options. You will get a consistent neck catch but otters are STRONG, especially if not in deep water. You will want good swivels.

I have caught a few otters in 160s set at rat crossovers.
Puts their lights out quick.
I have also caught Otters in 120s set for mink-also puts them down fast.
A 220 is the best for targeting otter exclusively under ice.

I've caught around a half dozen otter in
single spring DUKE #160's incidentally
while trapping for muskrat.

Catches them right behind the ears &
dispatches them fast without much
if any struggle at all.

That being said, I've never purposely
set a #160 with the specific goal of
catching an otter.

220's is way gooder.

They work but you’re making it more difficult to find locations that they fit properly to be effective

Same as others, every one that has found it’s way into any 6x6 I have had set have dispatched with little struggle(even on dry land). The challenge is to get them into one constantly. But the very largest one I have taken(and it was very) was with a 160. With the increase of otter numbers over the years I have learned I must secure even 155’s for potential otter.

Worked three times for me but was targeting mink with a string across the triggers

I never used anything smaller than a 220. Preferred a 330 with the trigger wires on the bottom.

In New Jersey, if you have an otter permit, you are allowed only 3 traps size 220 and larger. 160's however fit under that size limit and as long as they are set completely underwater are considered mink or rat traps so there is no limit on trap numbers.

My favorite otter set was 220 in the slide below a dam in the winter time with the trigger in the trail.

This! Thanks Eric, I assume solid stake or drag and swiveled well? Any other tips?
