Surprize on the trapline.

Surprize on the trapline. - 11/04/23 10:23 PM

Had a srprize today on the line.
I dropped a beaver carcass at a jackpot on my way into camp the other day.
Today I was bringing in the generator and noticed this.

The beaver had been partially eaten and covered up with debris.
I knew right away that a cat had claimed the carcass,so I set 4 snares, and continued into the camp.
On my way out a half hour later I noticed this.

This jackpot is about 100 feet from the box where I caught the Canary marten.
Looks like it might be an interesting season.

Why wouldn’t you wait for it to fully prime?

They grade by the clarity of the belly.Cats coming on to prime have nice clear bellys a lot of the time.
I will be catching cats right thru the season so a couple earlys and a couple lates dont hurt.
This big tom has an excellent belly.

A jackpot is when they hit the jackpot.

A big bait with normally 8 snares on 3 sides with the North side blocked.

It's a Canadian term for what we call a carcass pile. "Jackpot" just sounds affluent. It's the French influence.

Re: Surprize on the trapline. - 11/05/23 05:12 AM

Why do you block the north side?
Posted By: Boco

Re: Surprize on the trapline. - 11/05/23 01:22 PM

They rarely approach from the North side, likely due to prevailing winds.Saves snares and funnels them into snares on either side on their way out of the jackpot.
Thats the way I was taught by the oldtime snaremen,so I dont mess with success.

Setting on sign is always a wise strategy. That lynx being right there for the taking makes for an awesome story from the line! Congratulations!

Funny stuff, catch a cat like that in 30 minutes and the critic's come out wanting to know why you don't do this or that, hahahaha. Maybe if you set the north side you could catch them in 15 minutes instead of 30? lmao.

That's a PRETTY cat!
