Beautiful critter! I have never caught a Marten like that before.

Re: Caught a Canary. - 11/02/23 11:51 PM

They are kind of rare=less than 1% of the harvest.
No 9 on the colour scale for Marten

Re: Caught a Canary. - 11/03/23 12:11 AM

I froze it whole for now in case some taxidermist wants to buy it.
If not,I will skin it complete and tan it.
When I get tired of looking at it I might make something out of it.

Re: Caught a Canary. - 11/03/23 12:17 AM

Or work it up into a hat with a combination of skunk fur or black marten.

Re: Caught a Canary. - 11/03/23 12:37 AM

My guess is a taxidermist will make an offer you can't refuse.

Re: Caught a Canary. - 11/03/23 02:50 AM

Nice catch. My first experience with canary martin was at an FHA auction. There were strings of them. Not knowing any thing I assumed they all came from one area. After understanding how they did the auction. Then I realized they loted like kind together and they could come from different trapping areas. There were several strings so even thou they are scare quit a few do get caught every season.

Nice marten. I have never seen one like that yet. I caught a grey one and a jet black one. Hopefully I see one just like yours hanging this winter

That's awesome, Boco! I've never seen that color phase, though I caught one with that color at its throat.

Nice Boco!

On a side note, thats a cool reference manual you have there showing the different colors.
Does it contain info on other, more southern fur bearers as well?

That looks like that is from NAFA. I have the same one. I'm not sure the one posted would grade as a true canary by NAFA standards? Mine never did.

Re: Caught a Canary. - 11/03/23 09:03 PM

In western interior Alaska in far western Unit 20, canaries were about 10% of the catch. Very high proportion. Nice one, Boco.

That is from the WFMC - the trappers bible-I thought all trappers had one.
It covers everything.

Re: Caught a Canary. - 11/03/23 10:54 PM

Really cool catch. I’ve only seen one marten and that was in Colorado and it was orange. I had no clue that was a rare color. That was 20 years ago and I can still remember it, so energetic and seemed to glow in the sunlight shining thru the evergreens.

10% that is remarkable Gulo.
I hope this guy was able to spread a few of his genes around before I snuffed him.

That is why I prefer foothold traps over coni types.
I used to catch a lot of those canaries but they made the other 50% of my catch look bad.

So I always release that color phase now.

Re: Caught a Canary. - 11/04/23 05:21 PM

Since I catch 60 to 70 percent pale to extra pale marten and they almost always bring the least money, I'm not enamored with pale marten. I find black marten beautiful. smile

Re: Caught a Canary. - 11/04/23 06:04 PM

Well then, with limited to only one colour, you'll nevah be able to have a hat built like mine, then ... every marten in this hat is a different colour. Especially the bright orange one, a "canary" I call OJ, which is in the rear, contrasting nicely in showcasing the three tails. Shown with flaps down in this pic. There's a place for all colours ! cool

Thank you, Boco. Your black marten is gorgeous. Imagine the combo of your OJ and Blackie together in a hat.
