Dustan Chestnut trees

Who has dustan chestnut trees on their property? I would like some nuts to plant for wildlife. I am willing to pay shipping for them. Please PM me if you can help me out.

I'm surprised that no one has these chestnuts. With all the deer hunters here I suspect several would have them.

I have some but they haven't produced any nuts yet. The top seems to die out each year.

I have Chinese that produce.
Would not sell or ship due to worms.
Not hard to grow here if you can hide them from rodents.
Deer love em. I eat them too.
Careful where you plant,
the burs can be a mess in the wrong area.

Chinese & Dunston's? Do they hurt your vehicle tire? The deer don't seem to have trouble with them (that I've heard of anyway)

These won't be in my yard. Got twenty acres to plant them on.

I have four one year old trees ordered. Two early drop and two late drop. They are a cross American and dustan. But leaning more to American. I should get them in march. I also purchased four pounds of nuts locally. They are being propagated now. Hopefully this spring they will start to root. There were 235 nuts in four pounds. Paid $20 for four pounds. Maybe in a year I'll have trees to sell.

Bought a pound of Dunstan chestnuts 4 years ago. Stratified in the fridge and potted in oversized I believe 2 gallon pots as I didn't want any root bounding and wanted to wait to fall to transplant. Planted them on my uncles 20 acres. Have only lost one and that was due to neglect. Last year was the first year they produced which was about 75 nuts total. This year it was about double that. The soil here is acidic and is very conducive to chestnut growth. Tree range in height from 6ft to 15ft+. I started some for a buddies property in Hillsdale Michigan 2 years ago and his have done really well except he didn't tube high enough and the deer eat everything that comes out the top. Trying to get him to fix that but no luck thus far.

I took a landowner's forestry course from the Mo Dept of Cons, some tips they taught were:

Spray patch about 5' dia before you plant and keep it sprayed, It's amazing how much grass/weeds will compete with the trees.
Plant according to the trees spacing needs too.
Make sure to plant in an open area for plenty of sun or not as needed.
Pay attention to the plants water needs and pick your patch accordingly.

Put a bag of 10 10 10 around the drip line.

Chestnut Ridge of Pike County may have some. Bought a pound from them , $15 a pound, stratification in process.

I've never been able to find a local source of chestnut seeds.

I gave up on the "obscure" trees and have gone to only planting white oak, swamp white oak, apples, and pear trees for the animals/deer hunting........

I'm gonna add a bunch of crab apples over next few years....here in snow country (not this year) its amazing how much the wildlife hammers the crab apples after January 1st, reaching up/standing up on hindlegs to get to the dried-up fruit.......

Apples will produce for you much earlier in their life time vs. some nut trees needing 15-20 or more years to get first fruit.......

I planted 100 Chinese chestnut trees throughout my property.. Not much top soil. Trees that did the best are on a hillside, up on the top in a spot that just gets baked not one survived..

Planted 100 hazelnut at the same time and they seem to do good everywhere

I also bought two presimon trees with tubes as a challenge to a friend who bought some to plant in Cadillac Michigan. It's the heighest elevation in the lower Michigan. He said he was told this early ripening version would produce fruit in the hunting season. I told him I didn't think it would. So to back that up I decided to run my own little test to see if they same tree will produce further south. I'm by Grand Rapids Mi. About 110 miles from his hunting property. We'll see if the tree will ripening fruit in either location in Michigan. The key here is is Michigan to far north for presimon trees to produce fruit. All my trees will have 5' fencing around them.

I have them growing on the Mountain behind my Barn in WV. Best Deer and Small game hunting around BUT I do not want them in the pastures.

Concerned the cattle will step on them?
