Re: Handgun hunters - 08/08/23 01:04 AM

I have only used two. A 357 magnum and a Pietta model 1858 new army. twice with the 357 once with the cap and ball. Shot conicals with the Pietta. 3 shots three deer. About 50 yards tops with the 357 both times and 20 with the Pietta. Get close shoot careful. A lot like bowhunting.

Hunting what?

Currently
Small game my rugar mark 2 with suppressor. Or mark 2 government or single 10.
Deer 45lc rugar black hawk. Only thing I have acquit now.

In the past 357 mag Smith, 44mag rugar red hawks, and 308 Thompson center encore.

Handgun hunting is OK but I no longer do much of it preferring a long gun. At one time it was all I did during firearms season.

Think I killed five deer many years ago with a TC Contender in 7-30W. Technically a handgun but when shooting off sandbags, it is very much like a rifle.

Re: Handgun hunters - 08/08/23 05:43 PM

Go to Lipsey's site and check out their Ruger selection . I prefer a .45 LC with a 5.5 inch barrel. I like big calibers , favorites being .480 Ruger,.475 Linebaugh and .500 JRH. But they do require concentration when you touch 'em off. .480 isn't awful, though.

I have a lot of respect for folks that willingly shoot .454 . I've shot 'em and handed them right back, went straight back to shooting my .475 and .500. Something about it's "snap".

XP-100 6x47 Remington for deer, 7BR for everything bigger. 221 fireball for the smaller varmints!

Re: Handgun hunters - 08/08/23 06:21 PM

After ten rounds it will leave a bruise at the swell of my thumb. But its worth it. I should have gotten rubber oversold grips for it but love that rose wood grip to much to cover it up

It takes a while to go through a can of these

Re: Handgun hunters - 08/08/23 08:00 PM

I'm by no means an expert, but the guys here helped me out a good bit awhile back when I came into a pile of 41 magnum reloading supplies. With their help I shot my first deer with a handgun this past season. 210 grain Sierra bullet. TC Contender. Deer didn't make it far....

I'm not a big deer hunter but kill enough to keep the freezer well stocked. I don't see any need for a rifle with my hunting conditions and this 41 mag setup. Pretty impressive on the distances at which it stays accurate as well

If we were a little closer I'd let you take her to the range for a day. She is a little sweet heart and I am tickled I bought her for less than $500.

Monster Toms,

Hold on to those XP's.

I have one in 7mmBR. never shot. It's one of the last 2 XP's ever sold to employees.

Can't use it in Illinois.

I use an old Dan Wesson, .44mag, 10" barrel.
