I retired at 60 years old on September 20, 2012.
Had a great job, but a greater retirement.

Plan to at 62.5. May go to 65, all depends. I don’t have a physically demanding job, more mental than physical. I do have some days I just have come home and sit and close my eyes just so my head can unwind, lol. I make too good of money with too good of benefits to walk away.

I retired 3 months ago on Jan. 31. 65 years old.
My youngest sister just retired today. She's 61.
My middle sister retired about a year or so ago. She's 63.
I was just thinking about this a while ago, me and my siblings are all retired now. Where has the time gone?

Planning on 59 , start getting myself rebuilt. LOL
With short term disability insurance the company has, we can be off 6 months at time.
Hope to stretch it all out till in 62 or better.

Re: At what age did you retire from working or plan to - 04/27/23 06:28 PM

Just turned 59 and would love to pull the plug at 62. Hate every second of my job anymore.
I might get squeezed out by the new generations purges of older workers before then. My knowledge is keeping me useful to them for now

Going to be tough to make it financially. Wife has serious medical condition that requires insurance plus a boat load of money.

I am not really retired. I still work when I want to. Going to start again in May for a few months. Wife says retire but I can only take so much of it. Moneys nice too. Ran my credit card up 2000 bucks in just a few days. A/C repair, broke the windshield on my jeep, bought some ammo. Can't think of any reason not to earn a little now that winter is over. Put that 2 grand back in the bank. Add a little more to it.

I applaud you gentlemen with the saving power and jobs that payed well enough to retire early. By my calculations I was going to need $3 million saved to retire in my mid 50’s. I’m 55 and a little short, I’ll blame it on bad habits for not making that commitment, lol.

Re: At what age did you retire from working or plan to - 04/27/23 07:38 PM

Well I'm 57 and own my own business. I take every Friday off. Don't work real hard as I have great people in place to do that for me. I leave whenever, check traps, turkey hunt as
I wish, deer hunt the same, spent a ton of time an hour away the past three years building my dream cabin. But my wife also has a really good job. So not real sure when I'll officially
retire, may just come in once a week and do the books but if I looked and found a good buyer that would take care of my employees I'd go tomorrow and do something else, been thinking
of making custom turkey calls or some taxidermy for some pocket cash?

I retired just before my 80th birthday. That was the end of the year. The frost is finally out and I'm trapping pocket gophers, cutting wood, building a new deer stand, fishing, etc.
It's a real change; not used to having free time on my hands.

That’s a possibility too…
Rumor mill is my company “may” offer 3,3, & 3 rule.
Add 3 years
Offer 3 years salary
And add 3 years average to your pension

That will definitely get some folks out the door.

At 61 last June. Started drawing S.S. last December. I've been offered 2 jobs since then. I retired so I didn't have to work any more! Now it's my time to do what I want to do. Not because I have to.
The best advice I was ever given was "Retire when you can financially retire". Don't wait.

Forced into it at 58, almost 72 now. Best thing that ever happened to me. Over night I went from a giant bottle of Tums per week to none. After a couple years I gave up trying to just get interviews. Every response I got to resumes, dang few, was "too qualified".I think it was more a case "we don't want to pay for your security clearances". It has all worked out for the best. My wife and I have more money in the bank and in our pockets than we ever had. Been married 44 years come the end of July.

Re: At what age did you retire from working or plan to - 04/27/23 10:57 PM

My plan was at 57 one month and day past my birthday. That would be July 1, 2036. BUT my 30 and out is questionable and tied up in court since we were sold. They agreed to keep out benefits the Sam and in place and accepted 4x the cash they paid for our plant in out retirement $ but then decided to change that.

I may change jobs before then if they rule against us. I will never retire just transition into my hobbies full time.

Re: At what age did you retire from working or plan to - 04/27/23 11:26 PM

I retired at 56 1/2 2 years ago, I wish I had gone sooner, life is so much better now with out all that stress and I didn't realize how much there was until I was out of it. My family life is so much better now because I don't have to try to juggle it around work, being on call 24/7 365 wears on a person and I had done that for almost 35 years. I am so busy now I don't know how I ever had time to work. I highly recommend it. My Mom and Dad had so many plans but just wouldn't retire for fear that they couldn't make it that when they did retire their health wouldn't let them do many of the things they had planned to do. The sad part about it is that Dad found out that he had been paying them to work because his retirement check was over 200 dollars a month more than his work check. That is why it is important to talk to the HR folks and do retirement calculations.

I turn 60 in July and retiring is not something I want to do. Spent the last 40 years in the bush most of time guiding hunters, trappers, and anglers. I get a full season every year with little time off. Im happiest when I get up in the morning and realize I have so much to do there is no way I can get it all done. Some day it will come to a screeching halt but for now I will just keep going.

You like doing gardening Pete, and you already planted one new tree this year. Keep up the good work!

I may change jobs before then if they rule against us. I will never retire just transition into my hobbies full time.

It looks like I'm going to get to keep my 30 and out at least for the next 4 years of this new contract. 2036 and retirement at 57 here I come. Well if I live that long anyway.

I am going to work in about 15 minutes. Wife aint real happy, kids aint real happy about it, my 85 year old mom is real unhappy, but I get bored after a few months. I dont work in the winter. Havn't in a long time unless you call trapping work. I don't want to. Its why I turn down most damage requests for money. I will trade beaver control say, for fur trapping permission but when you take a trapping job its to please to the person hiring you. When I trap I only have to please myself. Come Nov I will be ready to stop working for money. If the spoonbill are running, or I decide to go to LUSK come Aug I dont get permission. i just do it. Its nice to be able to work when I want to and stay home when I want to. had to spend a grand the other day on A/C, 650 bucks on a windshield for my jeep, and just found out my moms handicap van needs 6 grand of work done to it. Its also nice to know none of those costs have to come out of savings. So i guess i will work summers till i can't pass a D.O.T. physical anymore

I’ve been self-employed since 1996. I run two small businesses and I really enjoy it. I just turned 65 and I have no plans to retire. And I am still healthy and physically fit and as long as I am able I will continue to do residential building and remodeling. I have a handful of employees and great subcontractors who can take care of everything for me but I like to get on the jobs and put in a good day‘s work myself when I can.

In 20 months I will start collecting my full Social Security benefits.

Right now I can leave for camp whenever I want, I can hunt, fish, trap whenever I want. My businesses are capable of pretty much running themselves with very little oversight from me. I just have to keep up on the paperwork for the most part.

The money is really good.

Why would I retire?

I’m going to comment again. I don’t know when or even if I’ll retire. I mean maybe one day, but after a 2 week vacation I was READY to get back to work. I’d end up killing myself if I was retired. I don’t mean that literally, I mean I come off vacation and need a break…work break! If I didn’t have a job I’d never sleep and wear myself out probably cutting my life short.
Then again, maybe if I was retired I wouldn’t go so hard on my vacations. Always two ways to look at something.

Maybe when I get this Vette back to pre accident condition

had an uncle that worked in a shop that specialized in fixing vets.
The stories he told about your "typical vet owner" would make you laugh for hours, unless of course your a vet owner.

Retired at 55 10 years ago after 34+ years. Decent pension and now S.S. too.
Never married, no kids and was always good at socking away money in the bank.
Now I spend my time enjoying hobbies like gardening, ham radio, astronomy and playing a little electric guitar for my own enjoyment.
Had a bunch of health issues the past 4 years, things seem to be settled down for the moment thankfully.
