3.5 Eco Boost vs 5.0 Coyote - 04/26/23 12:28 PM

If the pickups have the same rear end gears, what would pull better? I have a 3.5 and pulling my Fish house and 18 ft tandem trailer with Skidsteer. And it pulls them real good with 11 to 12 MPG.

Im looking at buying a 2018 or 2019 F-150 crewcab. But I keep thinging 3.5, then there's guys at work that have the 5.0 and say its pulls better.

What do you guys think?

The 3.5 boost is a more powerful engine and tows great. The 5.0 also tows really well. It is really a powerful engine too. I doubt that you’ll lose any capability. You just won’t have quite as much response with the coyote. Much simpler engine than the boosted 3.5….

I just test drove both. 22’s. I did hook up a 3500 lb trailer and tow it around a bit. No wdh. Neither really outshined the other unless you floor it then the 3.5 has a little more go go. If I remember correctly, the towing ratings were about the same. Just watch payloads. They can be mighty low with a loaded 1/2 ton. I personally was leaning towards the coyote until I drove a ram….and got the ram employee discount making the choice easier.

A mechanic told me that the 5.0 got better mileage than the ecoboost when towing heavy with all things being equal…no idea how true that is.

From what you read and hear not much difference in the everyday use catagories. The big difference is eco boost is forced induction. If you are going to pull and or keep the truck for a long time the ecoboost won't hold up like the tried and true 5.0.
They are pushing the eco boost so if you google it look at where the info is coming from. Ford has glorified the 3.5 so they tend to hide any advantages other engines have...

I am far from an expert Most of the above post sound very reasonable to m . However I purchased a used 3.5 ecoboost about 8 years ago It has served my needs quite well I however do not do a large amount of towing .What I have found though is when I need power to get up and go the 3.5 does what I need it to do .And for general driving it has as much power to the wheels wen needed as any car or truck I ever owned

I prefer naturally aspirated vehicles for longevity.

every 3.5 breaks manifold bolts is what i was told, somewhere around 120k miles, about a 4 grand fix because they pull the cab off to fix it.

Had a 5.0 since 2015. Pulls great. Lots of power. also gets good gas mileage when not pulling.

More HP and more torque in the 3.5. Best tow vehicle I've owned was the f150 with the 3.5 eco and the max towing package. I now own a Ram 2500 with the 5.7 and it'll tow, but not like that f150.

personally i'd go with a NA over a boosted engine every time, less complications the better even if its less power.

I'd stay clear of a 2019 5.0 Coyote, unless you like adding nearly a quart of oil every fuel fill up. Ford refuses to recall and fix the problem that everyone is having with it. They do offer a new dipstick as a "fix" It has a longer section of hash masks on it so that you think that it is only one quart low when it is actually two quarts low.

All the newer trucks are garbage no matter the name on the badge.

Everyone I know that’s had a 3.5 has been a tad disappointed in the mileage both towing and dry (it’s supposed to be better).

We’ve had four 5.0s and have been happy with all of them. Except fords doors.

Don't know if the above link worked.

Try this for the 3.5.

Traction control probably helps now but if your ever going up a steep icy hill and the truck downshifts causing the turbo to spool you'll wish you just had a V8 instead of the turbos under the hood.

Unless your skid steer is small you'll be about maxed out with a 1/2 ton. If you are pulling it alot you'd be further ahead with a super duty.

I bought a F250 with a 6.2 new in 2019 and it’s the best truck I’ve ever had. I’m knocking on wood right now. Lol

Ditto this.

I think MAX towing capacity of the f150s (with all the specific towing package extras) is somewhere around 11,000 lbs.

Double that for the 3/4 tons.

If it was occasional towing I wouldn’t worry, but if a regular thing I’d be looking at a 3/4 ton.

If you go with the EcoBoost, get the newer model with direct injection and port injection.
