Who is leading after the first round?

Re: Big Ten Wrestling - 03/04/23 10:18 PM

Iowas leading, but that’s partially because P St. had quite a few byes. Gomez looked like crap. It’s his first match back since he got injured; and he’s still injured. No where near healthy. That being said, Gomez being hurt should make Yani feel a little better about going after 4 at Nationals. Go Hawks!!

Re: Big Ten Wrestling - 03/04/23 11:11 PM

How does the scoring work? If a wrestler gets a bye it seems to me the team would be penalized because they wouldn't get any points, or does a bye get them automatic points. What is the score after round one?

Re: Big Ten Wrestling - 03/04/23 11:30 PM

I’m not sure how that works. Iowa was up by 10 or so going into the consultations. On a side note, Gomez lost again on an illegal slam DQ…unreal

If you win after the bye you credit for pin 2 pts. plus advancement 2pts. If you lose after a bye you get no points.

Re: Big Ten Wrestling - 03/05/23 02:58 AM

I tried to watch tonight, all I know is Nebraska advanced 5 out of 5. I can't hear so I do not hear any commentary, I try to read the closed caption, but then I find myself watching the match an not reading. Not one time during the night did I see them post the team standings. So who the heck is winning?

Re: Big Ten Wrestling - 03/05/23 04:09 AM

penn state will be walking away with at least 4 champions. but you can never doubt levi haines ability to shine! and kirkvliet has a good chance to win too if he wrestles better than he did the last match vs parris.
here are my predictions on champs

125. Spencer Lee
133. Roman Bravo Young
141. Real Woods
149. Sammy Sasso
157. Peyton Robb
165. Dean Hamiti
174. Carter Strocchi
184. Arron Brooks
197 Max Dean
heavyweight. Greg Kirkvliet

You were correct in predicting 4 champions. Penn State won the Big 10, now to bring home the National Title is the next order of business.

Re: Big Ten Wrestling - 03/06/23 01:22 PM

I’m a HUGE Hawk fan, but I’m also a huge Wresling fan. Watching Levi Haines all year as true freshman has been a blast. Watching him finish Payton Robb with a dominating double to the mat was the match of the tournament for me. I was also happy to see Carter handle Labriola the way he did. I’m not anti Nebraska
( I went to college there), but their 1 seeds have been over hyped all year in my opinion. Here’s where you PSU guys are gonna hate me; I was glad to see Max Dean get beat at 197…..,now hold on, I got nothing against Max, I’m sure he’s a fine young man, but since last years finals, I’m not convinced he’s the best wrestler at 197. And no, it sure isn’t Jake Warner either but here’s my thing with Max. I think he’s good….I think he’s super duper strong, I think he’s amazing on top as big as he is…..but that’s it. I guess maybe his matches bore me a little, but I was ready for a shake up at 197. I hope Lee can take care of business at 125 nd go out a 4 timer, but I also can honestly say I think RBY deserves the Hodge if he runs the table at Nationals.

Re: Big Ten Wrestling - 03/06/23 01:44 PM

Good post Outlaw, I am not a huge wrestling fan, I am a huge football fan. I just started to following wrestling a few years ago and there is a lot I do not understand. I especially have problems understanding a takedown. There are times I think it is a takedown and no points are awarded and there are times I don't think it is a take down and there are points awarded. I graduated from high school in 1963, our school did not have wrestling as a sport. We did a little wrestling in gym class. I was the smallest kid in my class and usually had to wrestle kids 20 pounds heavier than I was. I was a farm boy and I was actually strong for my size, I did not weigh 100 pounds until after I graduated, lol. I remember the very few matches I had in gym class I was able to pin my opponent. For a joke the gym teacher put me up against the biggest kid in the class, he weighed well over 200 pounds. That was the only match I lost, lol. He could not pin though.
