Where to find Warm Heavy Wool Socks?

Posted By: Willy Firewood

Where to find Warm Heavy Wool Socks? - 11/11/22 07:25 PM

Please help me find a source for warm heavy wool socks. Boot size 14 or 15.

I used to get good socks from Cabelas, but what they have now appear to be for mall walkers.

Thanks!

Bison wool socks are the warmest you’ll ever use, unless you can afford handmade musk ox wool.

Re: Where to find Warm Heavy Wool Socks? - 11/11/22 10:16 PM

Wanna be - tried that. Too many confusing options. Specific reference would be great.

Jab - I know nothing or nowhere to search or rely on in the ski world. Specific reference?

Turd - they look interesting. May order some to test.

Elk - they look great but are out of my price range since I need more than one pair.

Nessy - you are joking I hope. And yes I have had hand knitted wool socks. They were too soft and became netlike.

Beard - out of my price range.

Ams - second recommendation. I will try the heavy hunters.

I last bought warm thick XXL wool socks about 10 years ago. They were just what I wanted at cabelas in the bargain cave. I bought all they had. They are now all worn out top, bottom, everywhere. They offer nothing similar.

Thanks for the help!

Beard - that is no more than the darn tough socks. Interesting. Will look further.

Another vote for darn tough. Very comfortable socks. wear only one pair in winter and feet stay warm, and I work outside for hours at a time. Sent three pairs back after 3 years of continual use, they had one small hole in each pair. Waited 3 weeks and now I have a voucher for 81.00 which I used yesterday. Got 2 pairs for work and 2 pairs of the hunters. Had to spend another 33.00, couldn't resist! Impossible to beat!

redhead brand heavy wool socks are decent (at least they were when I purchased mine) and have a lifetime warranty. They were not crazee expensive either.

Re: Where to find Warm Heavy Wool Socks? - 11/11/22 11:57 PM

I bought another two pair of Wigwam F1402 (used to be Ingenius) Smart Wool socks off Ebay last year to supplement some older pairs I bought at Cabelas. I like the Wigwams because they provide good warmth without the bulk.

I bought two pair of Smartwool Hunt X-Heavy Crew socks and two pair of Smartwool Mountaineering X-Heavy Crew socks off Amazon last winter. They are bulkier than the Wigwams but warmer too. I mostly where them when working outside in winter, wear them under my Red Wing 1411 insulated, waterproof work boots that are a size too large to allow for heavier socks.

Smartwool socks are excellent but very expensive. Bass Pro has some very heavy wool socks, another good source. I got some Realtree wool socks from Walmart a month or two ago and I love them. They got even heavier after a wash/dry cycle or three. Good price too.

If you get on their email list they sometimes have some killer sales, and that's when I stock up.

These socks are my daily wear since I have the privilege of being outdoors every day. Well I now have much to read about.

I can count the votes faster than most jurisdictions and Darn Tough wins the plurality with enthusiasm, even if not a complete majority. That is impressive enough for me to order some to try to keep my feet happy while reading about other options.

The bison wool socks are intriguing. Especially since I had a very close encounter with a huge bull bison back in 1983. Our neighbor has quite a few bison and I have never heard one complain of cold tired feet.

Nessy - our water freezes quite well to fowl up late waterfowl seasons, and so the walk on frozen water fishermen can go out. We have had sustained cold to -23° Fahrenheit. And I have been known to frequently visit very cold places - New Hampshire, Maine, and even our 51st state Canada. (Just joking for Boco’s benefit.)

Thank you my friends!

You won't regret getting Darn Tough socks. I bought 1 pair last year after reading about them on a Tman thread. I then bought a few more pair and they are the most comfortable socks I have ever worn. I do have two pairs that almost have holes worn in the heals but with what I have heard about their replacement policy I am not too concerned about that.

PS the model I went with is the Men's John Henry.

Re: Where to find Warm Heavy Wool Socks? - 11/12/22 10:50 AM

another vote for darn tough.
I have about 1/2 dozen pairs of wool socks that I use daily from Oct to May, I have had them for 4 years now and they still have no holes and fit nicely.
They stay where you put them even with boots on, no more socks sliding down and bunching up in sorel boots.

Yes, they are pricey but they last and they are made in America.

Try Colemans military supply in PA. Can be hit or miss but they're family owned and I've gotten a bunch of good stuff there.

Re: Where to find Warm Heavy Wool Socks? - 11/16/22 07:30 PM

I wear wool socks 365 days a year, yes even in summer. Biggest problem with me is am also a diabetic so the socks can't be too tight on the lower calf. Wear a 11wide shoe so normal 9-12 size is good only for a couple washings. Have tried the next size larger and they are good for much longer but eventually get too tight in the calves. Rag wool socks when I can find them fit the best over time but their loose knit make them not heavy enough in cold weather. When hunting still have a couple pair left from Fox River heavyweight hunting socks. When it gets really cold if one is inactive like when sitting on a deer stand I wear a pair of the liner socks inside to help wick away the moisture.

Most wool socks made these days are for yuppies to wear in their fancy shoes-not for the working man and they don't have any cushion in the feet. I'm still looking for some more as my stock is getting old, too

Re: Where to find Warm Heavy Wool Socks? - 11/18/22 07:01 PM

I have heard good things about Smart Wool but never tried them myself.

Don't get hung up on "heavy" wool sox. you don't want your boots jammed full with bulky sox. They will be warmer if your sock is adequate and your boots are loose

Also, CLEAN sox are way warmer than bulky dirty sox

Re: Where to find Warm Heavy Wool Socks? - 11/18/22 08:10 PM

Agreed about too much material crowding causing lack of wiggle room and warmth.
However, I do like the cushioning of thick socks, especially thick on the bottom.
And since my stash is low, I am washing my remaining socks very frequently.

I knew a guy who fought in WWII. He fought through the Battle of the Bulge where the winter weather was very extreme. He had one pair of socks and one pair of boots which were on his feet constantly. He got frostbite and trench foot. His feet bothered him for the rest of his life. He used to scoff at folks who liked to go camping. He said he went camping once - from 1941 to 1945.

Re: Where to find Warm Heavy Wool Socks? - 11/18/22 08:17 PM

I ordered some more pairs of Darn tuff. I only had two pair anyway. This thread inspired me to do that.

These do come in lightweight, middle weight and heavyweight wool, with cushioning . Options are half cushion, full foot cushion, or none.

With the lifetime guarantee, you can't go wrong.

They are perfect in boots , no bunching up, nice air flow to warm. Nice colours too grin

Re: Where to find Warm Heavy Wool Socks? - 11/18/22 08:31 PM

With all the business this has generated, they should give me a discount.

In their size chart they include xxl. However that was not an option on the socks that I ordered. Hopefully the xl will be comfortable.

I read some of the unusual stories about returned socks.

Agreed, which is why multiple pairs of socks are carried in a GI rucksack. And not just for warmth either, wet feet break down easier. We were taught to take advantage of any down time to swap for clean dry socks when on the march.

Re: Where to find Warm Heavy Wool Socks? - 11/21/22 09:16 PM

Well the new Darn Tough socks arrived today.
They are very nicely made and seem like a good choice.
They are comfortable, but snug.
The packaging says XL fits 12.5 to 14.5.
I wear 14 or 15 depending upon the specific boots.
If these perform well, I will wait for XXL next time.
They are in the washing machine.

I will definitely try out some of the other recommendations.
Maybe my sweet wife will splurge for some of the buffalo socks for Christmas.
She sort of likes me.

Mike - I am eager for your report on the buffalo wool socks.

Thank you to everyone for your friendly discussion and recommendations.

Re: Where to find Warm Heavy Wool Socks? - 11/21/22 09:29 PM

I ware bunny boots in the winter and it does not matter what kind of sock I ware. I wore them in Galena AK and Fairbanks AK and even filled them with water at ten below and kept setting and checking beaver traps for another eight hours. I think the OP needs good boots not a fancy sock.

Agree MJM, boots are WAY more important then socks.

Re: Where to find Warm Heavy Wool Socks? - 11/22/22 04:00 AM

Wool socks dry my feet out so much that they start to crack , bleed , and fall apart .

Maybe it's the dry climate to begin with

Can't do wool socks

Re: Where to find Warm Heavy Wool Socks? - 11/22/22 06:27 AM

MJM & Bucks - I appreciate your very good suggestions.
I have very good boots that fit properly and are insulated.
I know how to dress to stay warm.
The reason for my original inquiry was because ten years ago I bought a large quantity of great socks that fit my big feet, were very cushioned on the bottom, and warm.
Having been out of the sock market, I asked my friends here.
And again thank you to everyone.

Re: Where to find Warm Heavy Wool Socks? - 11/22/22 03:29 PM

The sizing on socks is crazy. I purchase the 13-15 size for my size 10.

Anything smaller I may as well give them away.

I purchased the socks for people with diabetes, because their not "bango string" tight.

After wearing the Darn Yough socks, I must report that they are excellent. However they are too small for my big feet. I look forward to when the again have XXL.
In the meantime I will look at other suggestions.
Thanks for the recommendations!
