My mother gave this Marlin .30-.30 today. It was my great grandfather’s before she hunted with it. What do y’all know about it? Years made? There are very few distinguishing marks. Under the lever are the the numbers 8379.

I’ve tried googling it but haven’t been overly successful.

Any info you guys can provide is greatly appreciated.

1893 or 1936 model based on the square bolt.

The sight is a redfield. Looks to be a redfield 70.

Thanks! Is there a way to tell between the 1893 and 1936 model?

Go to the library or Wally World in sporting goods, and peruse shooters bible, I think that's the one, it gives serial no's and years.

The "fat wood" forearm and the reciever shape says its a 1936, or just 36 as they're usually called. The 'C' preceding the numbers indicates a 1945 year of manufacture.

Neat old rifle!

Dandy rifle.

Nothing like a lever gun. I have a Marlin .44 mag also.

I hope you find the info you search for. What a wonderful addition to the collection.

Thank you, all. You’ve been most helpful. My mom gave it to me with the contingency that I use it. I’ll be hitting the timber with it this fall!

they stopped production for WWII as they did many guns or they only made them in military config those years like Ithaca M37 shotguns

Remington was ready to release the M740 in 1939 then didn't until after the war in 1950

1947 or 48 and after was sort of a new season in American gun making a lot of companies put lessons learned in war time production into their new or updated models

for machine time it takes a lot less time to make something mostly round (round stock) perfectly round and find the center of it and drill a firing pin channel

Marlin released the 336 in 1948 post war and it could be machined faster.
less machine time = lower potential cost , more production

the lever gun beat out some very good guns simply because they could make them to a price point that made them very friendly to farmers , hunters and anyone who needed a gun.

I love the old school peep sight- which I now know is called a Redfield. It's very accurate.
