Bought a savage bolt action with the accu trigger a couple of years ago. I love it. Can't beat it for the price.

10/22 Ruger is the only .22lr rifle you'd ever need.

A Ruger 10/22 is as good as it gets…hands down. They’re tough as nails and cheap.

I agree. My troops in Alaska got me one for my going away present back in 90. I can't even begin to count the number of critters that gun has killed over the past 32 years, and never a misfire.

Re: 22 riflle - 05/11/22 08:15 AM

I have many types of .22's shoot a crazy amount with grandkids. Ruger 10/22 is a fine fun gun, fun to modify. But when I'm hunting small game shooting rabbit and squirrel in the eyeballs, Marlins with the JM stamped barrel get used. My Ruger's are tough, reliable and look cool. I can pop off 500 rounds between cleanings. Marlins are far more fussy about cleaning. A day hunting may require 8 to 10 shots at most. Model 60 and model 25 being my two favorites. To the O/P Savage is also a very good simple platform. I have seen many cool variations as of late. I have 2 in my flock. The mags are plentiful and cheap. On another note, A while back I picked up a Heritage Rough Rider Rancher carbine rifle. It has 500 rounds through it. Never had to touch the sights out of the box. Much fun, just a bit loud.

I have a Ruger and its great, but I have a old Remington Nylon 66 that works great also.

I had a 10-22 for awhile now. Been a real good tool. It was made in the 70's according to the serial#. I bought it used in about 88-9. Still accurate. Not picky about ammo. Have to single shot 22 shorts but it isnt designed for them.

Re: 22 riflle - 05/11/22 10:10 AM

the only down side to the savages is the magazine, they are stamped sheet metal and spot welds the 10 rounder sticks out the bottom. there have been some complaints of them coming apart.

we have a Savage MKII-FVT accu-trigger it is the heavy barrel target gun and it does very well in that role a little heavy to tote around the woods but if hanging a white target and waiting for a horse fly to land on and shoot it off that is the tool for it. 10 round groups you can cover with a dime.

the 10/22 is 10 rounds flush in a very convenient package

if you just like bolt or plan to suppress the ruger all american 22 uses the 10/22 magazine in a bolt gun.

the savages bolts are very accurate the have a suppressor ready gun , as does Ruger.

one of the great things about the 10/22 is the aftermarket parts , absolutely everything in that rifle is replaceable and rebuild-able. not that they are at all prone to wear or breaking because they run for many tens of thousands of rounds . you just have no worry that one day the model will change and mags won't be available or that you break firing pin or extractor and there won't be options available.

10/22 mags disassemble you can clean and tighten the springs and re-assemble

if your looking at semi auto in savage I wouldn't the design is not as strong and mags are prone to over insertion and causing feeding issues when pressed on

10/22 is a great one
love my cz 452 trainer tho for a squirrel gun

Re: 22 riflle - 05/11/22 11:43 AM

Yep cotton. i have other 22's also. For a toss in the pickup, hog butchering time, coon in the chicken coop rifle by the back door, 10-22 is a sure enough work horse.

I recently gave to my Michigan Granddaughter a Stainless-steel Ruger 10-22 w/SS scope. My statement was, "Every grand child should have at least a .22 rifle.

They will kill a lot of things that can provide you meat and protection as well.

She did well on shooting Mothers Day. Even her mother liked shooting it.

I’ve never had anything but trouble out of both of the 10/22s I own. They both have had trouble cycling straight out of the box. They aren’t what they used to be.

Never had a Henry let me down though. Love my Henrys

Re: 22 riflle - 05/11/22 01:20 PM

22 rifles, a man can almost never have enough of them. There have been several 10/22's through my cabinets, only one left. At present there is a Remington 121 Fieldmaster, a Winchester 69A Target, a Marlin 39, a Henry something or other, my youngest daughter's 10/22 compact, a Remington 514, a Savage 25 (?), and a Remington 541-S my go to shoot'em in the eye squirrel rifle.

The 121 was my fathers. I can sort of remember him buying it from G&R Tackle, Seneca St, Buffalo, NY. He traded in a Winchester 90. I was a little kid, about 5 I think. I'm almost 71 now and I wish I had that 90 now. The 39 is a great shooter but doesn't eject empties worth a crap. The Henry, meh, it is smooth as silk though. The 69 is on par with the 541 accuracy wise, just isn't scoped. It sports the factory peep sight. I have a couple factory magazines for it, one of which is for shorts only. It's my favorite trap line gun. I can't see the sights on the handguns well enough anymore for me to be comfortable for dispatch. All the others are solid guns, and they all get shot.

Re: 22 riflle - 05/11/22 01:22 PM

The Ruger American Rimfire is a pretty nice little bolt gun, for the price point. They come with a decent trigger, show good accuracy, and have the threaded barrel option on a few models.

If the Henry .22 shoots as well as their .17 hmr I'd go with a Henry.I have two Nylon 66's I wouldn't trade for anything but seeing as their decades out of date I'd try the Henrys. My .17 Golden Boy is a great shooter.

Re: 22 riflle - 05/11/22 06:25 PM

I have never been all that picky about which brand of semi-auto 22 to use. The reason I lean toward the 1022 is the reliable flush mount magazine. I like not having to look at what I am doing when I change mags.

Re: 22 riflle - 05/12/22 02:17 AM

I like the Marlin 60 but it has a pretty wood stock I want to keep nice so I have a 10/22 in the pickup. They have both taken a lot of fur and freezer fare.

Re: 22 riflle - 05/12/22 06:31 AM

Remington 597 22wmr semi-automatic.
Leupold gold ring 3-9 scope.
Extremely accurate and very fun to shoot!

Another gun that is just right for .22wmr is the Ruger Single Six.

Long ago I had a Marlin 22wmr. Cannot remember why I was dumb enough to sell it.

Find a Marlin stamped JM 39A or 39TDS and you will keep it forever.
High quality and very accurate.
Plus, they have an awesome cool factor.

This old Winchester was my grandads then my dads and now mine. Dad kept it by the back door so it would be handy for protecting his chickens. He killed a lot of skunks and coons with it. I hunt with it once in a while. Last time wife and me had braised cotton tail that was the rifle I used. One of my grandsons is getting it when I am gone. He will put a brick of ammo through it in one setting if i let him. Or he would. Hes old enough now now may quit at half a brick

Lot of nice 22s but Danny that 62 or 62 a is super. Based on your story I would guess 62. I have wanted one or a browning trombone for a long time which will never happen due to price. But very nice plus a lot of others posted are cool. They don’t make them like they use to

I own numerous .22 rifles. Even have a 10/22. If I ever buy a .22 rifle for my grandsons it will be a Remington 550-1. Those old rifles will digest Shorts, Longs, or Long Rifle ammo....interchangeably.

Re: 22 riflle - 05/13/22 12:48 AM

Remington 572 was a work horse when I was in grade school. The aluminum receiver is it’s fault. All those years I blamed it on cheap bullets.
Remington 512-x bought about 20 years ago for a cheap alternative. She’s ugly but shoots straight. I refinished the stock for kicks and grins.
Don’t leave the house without the single six if checking traps.

Re: 22 riflle - 05/13/22 02:06 AM

You can't have too many guns. A 10/22 is a great plinker. I have a nice Remington pump for squirrel hunting. But for trapping I prefer a cheap bolt or single shot. Easier to be sure it's not loaded. I carry an Savage with a synthetic stock, light weight and was really cheap. Stick the magazine in, work the bolt, shoot the animal then put the magazine back in my pocket.

Re: 22 riflle - 05/13/22 02:16 AM

You guys are forgettin the MP 22, Grandsons .22 of choice. They burn through the ammo. It is a really good coon huntin rifle and is fun as heck on rabbits.

Re: 22 riflle - 05/13/22 05:32 AM

DRF - very nice 39A. Well loved!

DirtyD - beautiful rifles!

Danny - very nice Winchester. I have a couple of them.

I have had quite a few .22 rifles over the years.
Now I wish that I never so old or traded any of them.
However, there was always some strategy involved.
My first was a like new Savage pump with an octagon barrel.
Still have it 46 years later.

Too many to review here tonight because I’m tired and it is late
One of my favorites is a Marlin 39TDS. It is a straight stocked carbine.
I bought it new for coon hunting.
Our best hound ever was named Judy.
She was a magical hunter and treed so many coons that I told her that she deserved a new rifle.
So from then on it has been known as Judy’s rifle.
It has shot hundreds of coons.

I have a Remington 550-1.Awesome rifle. And yes,,the "floating" chamber allows it to cycle shorts,,longs,,and long rifles,,all loaded at the same time in the tube and never miss a beat.Bought it used but in great shape like 20 years ago for $50. smile

I don't like having a mag stick out like that. If there was a mag available that fit flush even if it only held only 3-4 rounds it would be nice.

Lots and lots of choices in 22 rimfire. I am willing to bet there are more 22's in the hands of private citizens than any other caliber. Not only is it very useful it is cheap to shoot. There have always been rifles available from very cheap to very expensive since the round was introduced.

22 LR has been around since 1884. It started out as the .22 BB Cap of 1845 and the .22 Short of 1857. Moved up to the the .22 Long in 1871. Since all that was before the invention of smokeless powder its another example of the few designs that made the transition and are still around. Stuff like 45-70 and 30-30.

Anything that old and still that popular is for one reason. It works really well. Nobody has ever improved significantly on it for that niche.

A hunter could keep his family fed if all he owned were a single shot 22 and plenty of ammo.

This thread proves that the cartridge is arguably the most useful firearm available today and lots of very fine firearms have been built to shoot it.

Maybe we need a 12 gauge thread now. A hunter could keep his family fed if all he owned were a single shot 12 gauge and plenty of ammo..........
