Net makers : Math vs feel - 04/06/22 01:28 AM

Ok question for the net makers. Finally about to get off my butt and try and do a video on making hoop nets.....well wire framed hoop nets. Anyhow I gotta probably seven or so pages in my note book on calculations, on how to get Thai and that when making nets. My question is though is at what point is it just something you need to be able to just look at and feel ? Like is their just math for everything? Like I cannot for the life of me come to some kinda equation that will have you tie a perfectly tight flat throat in a Dhoop turtle net . I just can't. So is there just may for everything? Ooorrr ???

I hope I’m understanding you question correctly.I always make my throats a half mesh shorter than my outside distance from front hoop to second hoop. This will keep your throat open a little and throat tight. But for snappers it doesn’t seem to matter cuz they seem to find their way in.

Nets need to be symmetrical. It’s more important for fish than turtles, but they need to be symmetrical to avoid problems. If the mesh are equal size, you should be able to count equal mesh. If they aren’t, make them close.

They don’t have to be perfect for turtles. Again, throats matter most with fish. Something many don’t realize is that fish can enter and leave nets that don’t have tight throats.

Legal definition of what you’re building isn’t a hoop net, it’s a wire net, at least in Louisiana, and it’s a separate license. Good luck buddy

There is a lot of math used in making nets

If you don't mind me asking btw , how to you get you throats so nice on this Dhoops ? Do you do any special net work at the throat to take up the slack or something? Seems every time I try and to a d hoop like a regular net either the top or bottom of the though with have alot of slack and just not come out very nice at all. Only thing I found out was to tie my line on the inside that that throat would connect to and tie the last meshes directly to it so I can get the tension just right on everything. Though this leaves me with some mesh's being longer then others it's the best way I've found.

You may need to add or subtract some meshes to the outside of the nets
