What does engine sound like? I know from experience, that the 01 and 02 Ford 4.0 starts to rattle over 150,000 miles, my 02 blew a hole in the valve cover when the teflon chain guides decided to wear out while going down the road with 172,000 miles on it.

sounds good. If I had one rattling I would have had it to a mechanic and got it checked. Gotta maintain them.

The 4.0 is tough as nails. I had one and sold it when I had 275k on it. Still ran good when I got rid of it.

Had one with a 4.0 never had to do anything with it but change oil. Traded it in at a 140k miles. Sometimes wish I would have kept it.

They were good dependable trucks. I had a couple of them. Only downside was gas milage was no better than a full size for half the truck.

Both the 2.9 and the 4.0 were great engines. IF, like everything else well cared for. I had a 2.9 in a Bronco II that had good care and had 335,000 when I sold it to local people in my small town rural America. They drove it for a couple years.
Our son had a 2.9 in a Ranger that was great. He also had a 4.0 that was great in a Ranger.
Congratulations on the great find!

Got a 2004 that came out of Florida. No rust. City truck they used to spray mosquitos with. 4.0 with120,000 +/- miles the passenger side cam guide went out and jumped time. Put a OEM reman engine in it. Cheaper this way than to buy a Ohio rusted piece of crap with over a 100,000 miles that could have the same thing happen.
Drive it every day.

Actually passed on it. drove 80 miles to see it wasnt as stated in ad. Said excellant shape 100,000 miles. Was rough shape kbb says fair.Body had 247000 and they had just put a used engine and tranny in it.,which he couldnt tell me history. a/c didnt work......black looked like maaco painted over red. It did run good and had nice wheels and tires . 2 broken door latches. huge patch of putty in bed..kentucky title the guy hadnt transferred to ohio yet. (school teacher)unreal. Another guy came looked and left while i was looking. I considered 2500 but after thinking on it figured I better pass. Too many little issues. Dang facebook marketplace. 2nd time i went to see an ad and it wasnt as ad stated. Reported it but they did nothing. So,search continues.

I sure liked the 98 I had with a 3,0. Bought it new. Put over 200,00 on it. rough hard miles that only another trapper could understand. N.D. IA WY NM KS. Off road in WY and NM has to be seen. I would still have it but my wife crashed it a couple years ago. good luck in your search.

I had a 02 with the 4.0, put 350 thousand on it before the frame broke. Didn't burn a drop of oil with 5000mi oil changes. Found a 2011 with a 4.0 last fall that had 20,000 on it, thats right 20,000. Could"t wait to get my hands on it. Very well could be the last truck I have to buy if it holds up like the last one.

Too bad Steve, my oldest son had a 1988 Ranger, manual, 4 cyl two wheel drive...bought it with 110,000
Sold it ...actually traded it with 170,000 because it was beginning to show it needed some work. But I had my three kids driving that one truck. My son recently saw the guy who he traded it to....still running but had to put some money into it. Tough truck ok gas mileage but got rusty in our salty state.
