Re: FHA Check arrived this morning - 08/23/21 11:01 PM

My check has not come yet but did look into my account and they sold all of my remaining coon (8 for just under $3 each)! At least I have a clean slate for the new season all the coon, rats and mink are gone. One has to look more then once as the rats are selling for about twice what a coon is selling for.

They private treated someone with 104 coon for 2.85 average before commission. They sold one coon at the auction for 2.00 and did not update my account until today. I had four 2x and the rest were 3,4,5x. They have sold the last fur of mine so I hope the 38.00 worth of commission will keep the lights on for all you others who need more abuse. I have had enough. Is that really why you sent your fur to an auction house to have it given away in a non competitive private treat? If so I guess they rock. Enjoy it while you can. They will not be able to sustain this much longer. Less and less trappers sending less and less fur because of the incompetence of the leadership and lack of trustworthiness. LLL

Re: FHA Check arrived this morning - 08/24/21 01:16 PM

Yeah, well looky there, the pt phone has been busy! They cleared out my little lot of donated coon for a $3.08 ave before commission. My best was a 3X C North-Central that went for $7, a couple other at $6, and the rest sub-Abe Lincoln. They did hold one back a 3X Select A-B North Central, I guess they do hold the line sometimes. HA!! Well, they can keep that one and the 5 grinners that went with the coon (make more coin on grinner skulls than the fur), my little "science experiment" is over. One and done with FHA.

And yes, young Bob from Nevada or anyone else, it was a science experiment. I was tired of these hanging in my basement utility room. Now they gone...

He sent those hides to FHA because they are a throw away product left over from castor trapping. Mission accomplished.

Seem like leaving them in the ditch would be a better use of your time. Did you guys even recover shipping cost? I have never sent anything off so am uneducated.

Re: FHA Check arrived this morning - 08/24/21 05:30 PM

Not really defending FHA but how would those that shipped felt If they would have not sold any of your fur?
Posted By: NEMOparttimer

Re: FHA Check arrived this morning - 08/24/21 07:00 PM

I would have much preferred it actually. Why would any buyer buy at auction when they know if will be available PT for less? I stop sending to NAFA for that reason ( and later for more obvious reason). Now fur harvesters is repeating the pattern. I would rather they sell it in a true auction. If it doesn't sell I'm fine with that. NO PT! If buyers know it won't be given away afterwards they might actually bid.

I haven't received my check yet, probably because it's so huge!!!!!

Re: FHA Check arrived this morning - 08/24/21 07:50 PM

Private treaty isn’t that bad. And they don’t always sell for less in the PT room.

On “hot” items like wolves and wolverine, there isn’t much if anything left when that species is finished in the auction room.

If a species, say fisher, sells well in the auction room, there aren’t any bargains in the PT room. They hold at value or maybe 10% more.

Yes, there can be “bargains” in the PT room but overall it is an option for selling goods outside the live or online auction.

Of course, you have to look at the PT process with an open mind, which is difficult for some of you to do……………

Finally a comment from experience and smarts. Some people would be better off prepping equipment for the coming season. If you don’t like the market sell me your stuff on the cheap!
Posted By: Boco

Re: FHA Check arrived this morning - 08/24/21 08:49 PM

I think FHA is doing a great job for us that depend on them, under the current circumstances.
You guys have the option to sell local without even putting your fur up.
One thing about the auction, even in poor markets, good fur sells.
In a poor market it doesnt make sense to ship lesser grade pelts to an international auction. If you trap when pelts are prime, target species that has some demand, know how to do a top job putting up your fur,and find alternative markets for the odd lesser pelt in your collection,You can still make a fair wage for doing something you like to do.
Posted By: NEMOparttimer

Re: FHA Check arrived this morning - 08/24/21 08:53 PM

I'm sure some very limited supply and high demand items do fine in PT. In 20+ years sending to both NAFA and Fur Harvesters off and on I 've never received higher prices via PT compared to the preceding auction.
Posted By: Boco

Re: FHA Check arrived this morning - 08/24/21 09:01 PM

That doesnt make sense-a lot of fur sold at PT is because there were no acceptable bids in the auction room in order to hold the value on the subsequent lots.

This is laughable. Yep she is the only one with any experience. Do you know how funny that is? I too have experience. Bad experience with the PT room. She is a buyer. Not a seller.

As I said before you all should enjoy it while you can. They are a turd circling the bowl. Just a matter of time before there will be no ignorant trappers left to ship them fur. Have fun because I have had all the fun with them I am willing to spend. As for getting equipment ready, it has been since 2020 when I shipped these last furs. I will never again trap an animal for trinkets and beads. LLL

It's a tough market right now no matter if you ship to FHA-PT, or if you conduct your own PT sale with Groney. My concern is that if the last big auction house does go under, future PT sales with Groney will never yield more than trinkets and beads.

You actually said something that made sense. The buyers give no acceptable bids on the auction room floor. They meet up later in the treat room where they somehow make a bid that is lower but acceptable. would you mind explaining on which planet that makes even a bit of sense? Part of the problem is that Groeny is already bartering in trinkets and beads. I sold my low grade beaver at FHA for more than he offered nose count. FHA held my selects.

If you knew how the auction works you would know what I am talking about.
If they drop on the better goods by the time they run down the lots there is no room for the lesser skins.
So the buyers cant get the better goods for a lower price so they either take lesser goods closer to value or go to the privat treaty room and buy within the original price parameter. They are buisnessmen you cant blame them for trying.
The auctioneers at FHA know all their tricks but are a bit too smart for them.
Lesser goods are sold freely into the market when the market is weak, there is no advantage to anyone ,trapper or auction house,to inventory those type of skins.

My dad had a bobcat sell for 1000.00 in PT last fall, I had one sell for 400.00. If that was at a reduced price I’d sure like to know what they was really worth. I have 2 bobcats at nafa that was prevalued at 900, and we all know what happened, just my 2 cents.

What a crock out of both of you.Fur market sucks lately just admit it.You can make a few bucks tanning and hooping and specialty stuff,,sure. But in general for the average trapper,,not so much.

You keep crawling around in the bat fecies,I'll be out in Gods country at the rivers and lakes trapping prime fur for 2oo$ a day.(thats only 7 beaver counting castor at the last sales price).Other fur pays the expenses which are negligible since I am out in the bush all fall and winter anyway.

Your time is worth very little I can see. I assume that the fur does not get skinned and put up by itself and even if you are fast those seven still take you a couple hours to skin, scrape, board, take off the board, bag up and get ready to ship or do you have fairies that do it while you sleep? lol. Re: FHA Check arrived this morning - 08/26/21 12:26 AM

7 beaver clean skinned and in the freezer in an hour and a half no problem. Skinned in the evening at camp after the wood chores, just another job at camp, while chewing the fat and having a few cold ones with a partner-Put them up in winter outside in spare time while doing other stuff.
I guess your idea of work and mine is two different things.bagging grading and sizing beaver is a pleasure not work-like counting money.

I been riding snowmachines since 1965 and 3 and 4 wheelers almost as long.Used a snowmachine to get to school. They are vehicles here-we need them to get around for our lifestyle.Of course the portion used to earn income is calculated as capital cost.
It is very little cost related to trapping.hardly no gas and very little milage to run lines.I buy a new bike and snowmachine every few years just to have a write off,or i would be paying too much taxes here in sociable land.I got so much trapping stuff I had to build more sheds.
I calculate trapping expense when hunting fishing and cutting roads to new lakes etc since it is all related to living on the trapline.
I dont really consider that work I consider it living the good life. The kind of freedom some of you guys dont understand, obviously.

My life is not ruled by the almighty dollar, actually i use very little actual money compared to income to live my life.

All the extra money I dont use I give it away. But it just keeps rolling in for some reason.

All the extra money I dont use I give it away. But it just keeps rolling in for some reason.

I for one am taking every possible legal deduction I can to offset the meager amount of income I make from trapping. Keeping as much of your earnings as is allowed is not fleecing your government.

With 4 pages of no sales listed it must have been double postage and with that weight how you had your back-brace on.

Best of luck all those that are going to set traps this coming season.

You sure are thick between the ears-read it again-all legal deductions as per small buisness allowed.
The govt here knows every pelt that I (and every other trapper) sell at auction or sell otherwise(as per mandatory harvest report)-royalty(tax) is paid on every single pelt when sold at auction or sent to a tanner.
The only time royalty(or any other taxes) is exempted is when harvested and sold by FN,or when kept for personal use.

You really have no clue LLL.

Re: FHA Check arrived this morning - 08/27/21 02:30 AM

We are allowed to tan our own for use and sale and yes when our harvest reports are compared to submitted reports from furbuyers,or auctions, and an audit happens we have to account for any pelts not on the sales reports. This is done thru invoice copies to those pelts sold directly to the public.Only tanned fur can be sold to the public unless a member of the public has acquired a permit to posess a raw pelt, then a trapper can sell a raw skin to a member of the public.A permit to posess a pelt is issued no charge to a member of the public who wishes to buy a furbearer pelt from a trapper. The permit has the buyers and sellers info on it,and royalty is paid.
I deal with outfitters whose clients wish to have a furbearer's pelt and have sold raw wolves and lynx to american hunters thru the outfitter who obtains the permits to posess for his clients.

During the fur season the MNR will occasionally audit your fur as reported on hand (in your freezer or tanned for sale)to make sure what you have reported is correct.

The MNR also audits our registerd traplines once in a while for aihts compliance.

As a holder of 3 registerd traplines worth tens of thousands of dollars each in improvements, not to mention the yearly income potential from each, you would have to be a nut case to try to hide a few hundred dollars worth of fur sales and risk losing your trapping licences and traplines.

You really really have no clue do you,LOL.

Spot on,and here the government will bend over backwards to allow small buisness to deduct all kinds of expenses and capital cost to help.
Even if you record a loss one year,it can be carried forward for several years if necessary to offset a year where earnings are high.

In my opinion active trappers are losing out if they do not apply all the relevant deductions on their income.

In Canada Farming,Fishing, and Trapping fall under the same code for reporting income.

You bet-that is real freedom to be able to own exclusive trapping rights (and responsibilitys)to hundreds of square miles of remote pristine trapping country, and build cabins and live out on the land.Of course there are rules like everything else.
No different than you paying land tax for your postage stamp size piece of land.

And just for your info, almost all the trapping regulations and protections of the resource were brought forth by trappers.

Right, I tend to believe that the majority of the money I make trapping, or working any other job, should be mine. If anyone is doing any fleecing, it's the government digging deep in the taxpayers pockets while the nonproductive get off for free.

Trapping is one of the most highly regulated industries in Canada-for a reason.
Of course a trapper may get away with cheating-for a little while-but who is he cheating?Since a registerd trapline holder is the front line conservationist on his land he is only cheating himself-no one else.

There is absolutely no reason for a registered trapline holder to harm his line for future income by hi-grading fur off his line-Quite the opposite actually.

I see LLL is not the only one who does not have a clue.

I had a surprise in the mailbox today, my first FHA check arrived! Whereas the pt flurry that showed up in my account only early this week, the deals with the pt phone must have been done about the time of the auction. I did find a Scheels gift card in my top bureau drawer a few weeks back so perhaps it and my FHA check can buy me a few more arrows and broadheads. Maybe...

Re: FHA Check arrived this morning - 08/27/21 07:00 PM

Heard some interesting info about this last auction.
Granted it was passed down a couple of times before me but it seems that those involved fha were concerned about most of this fur being held and returned to the next coming auctions.
The good news it seems is most if not all the fur is leaving the building and will be turned into garments instead of plugging the pipeline further.
Sounds like fha will have a huge amount of room in their freezers for the future.

With the poor prices paid they also expect a short harvest on most items coming up.

With that info and in my opinion when the oil prices rise over the next 2 to 3 years maybe we will see a decent turn around on finished goods.
At least I hope so as I have a nice pile of mink to unload once the prices come up.
Posted By: wissmiss

Re: FHA Check arrived this morning - 08/27/21 07:28 PM

I agree with ack on part of his statement - I’m quite sure most of the goods at FH that are fully paid for are leaving the building. Whether or not they are being turned into garments is another matter.

Just because goods leave the building, doesn’t mean they don’t return. Take them to a building regrade, mix em up a bit, send them back when the market improves.

It used to be a buyer could leave the goods at FH and then reconsign when ready. About 2 years ago, FH announced they weren’t in the fur storage business. Purchased and paid for goods had to leave the premises.

Just saying,

Re: FHA Check arrived this morning - 08/27/21 11:20 PM

Wissmiss, I forgot to. mention that from what I heard they had purchased or was renting cold storage with the expectation of them leaving them there.

Either way I truly believe the fur market will rise right along with oil prices.
With that said, our current administration without trying will end up driving oil prices to record highs.
Who knows, maybe I can average the 37$ figure on mink like I did a few years ago.

If that happens I will be smiling from ear to ear.

My thoughts are nimzy was asking me if ranch mink and oil will retest highs.

It took 2 years for the dollar to really start to devalue after the so called housing crisis of 2008 and the unprecedented at the time money creation that ensued.

We'll the amount of money that has been created out of thin air in the last 18 months dwarfs those figures and they aren't even close to done yet. Tapering? Yeah ok. They'll try.

If the dollar goes into the low 80s it's going to be a great time to drill for oil and trap muskrats

Shipped on March 1 and never received anything from FHA until I got a check today. Pleasantly surprised as I thought my fur mysteriously disappeared. LOL. My take on the market is there is no coon market, no beaver fur market, and trapping eastern coyotes will be a waste of time. Doubt if that take is new to anyone.
