A couple of years ago I heard part of an interview with James Mattis after he had left his position as Sec of Defense. Mattis, a retired Marine, mentioned the "Marine Comandant's Reading List." It can be found with a Google search and I have read a number of books from the list since. All were good reads.

Any of the Bill O'Reilly "Killing" series. I think there are about 10 now. The latest is Killing the Mob.
I've read Killing Jesus and Killing Lincoln. Great reads.

O’Reilly’s Killing Crazy Horse I enjoyed. All of James Alexander Thom is great. The Frontiersmen , That Dark and Bloody River, and A Sorrow in Our Heart about Tecumseh by Alan Eckert is very good. Stephen Ambrose’s Undaunted Courage about the Lewis and Clark expedition is great. Ted Franklin Belue’s The Hunters of Kentucky is very good. A lesser known author, David Nevin wrote I think five books before he died and they are very good reads.

I spend a lot of time driving and YouTube has a lot of audiobooks you can listen to...

Unintended Consequences by John Ross (out of print and expensive to get, but free PDF downloads are available)

The Gulag Archipelago by Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein (the movie doesn't even come close to the moral of the book)

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress also by Heinlein

I'll try to think of some more.

Isaac Asimov's Robot series

I highly endorse Mike's Unintended Consequences suggestion
Molon Labe by Kenneth Royce
Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind

We Were Soldiers Once & Young by Harold Moore and Joe Galloway - fantastic account of the first major Vietnam battle

For some great light-hearted reading, you must read some Patrick F. McManus. Here are but a few of his books.

"The Night the Bear ate Goombaw"
"They Shoot Canoes Don't They?"
"A Fine and Pleasant Misery"
"The Grasshopper Trap"
"Real Ponies Don't Go Oink"

Yes, both excellent. I do believe Demonic is ACs best book though.

Peter Capsticks books "Death in the Long Grass" and Death in the Silent Places" are great! Totally a separate genre, but I'm currently enjoying "Acid For the Children" by Flea (of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers).

The Old Man and the Boy by Robert Ruark is one of my all-time favorites. A few recent ones: A Man Called Ove by Fredrick Backman was a good one and My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologies also by Backman was a great read.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is supposed to be aimed at a younger demographic but I thought it was a great read, an excellent book.

This is a common topic here on Tman that cycles about monthly. I, for one, am glad it does, as I frequently hear of new titles.

Recent books I've read (usually for the ninth or tenth time) that I thought were outstanding.
Idaho Loners: Hermits, Solitairies, and Individualists by Cort Conley.
The Long Walk by Rawicz
Antler Development in Cervidae edited by Robert Brown

Wheel of time by Robert Jordan.....it is epic...and a long series. Stephen kings the dark tower is a good series. The gunslinger is the first one I think. Stephen hunter has some very good books. He was a Vietnam vet and these books all have to do with snipers and shooting and about an Ole boy named Bob Lee swagger. The books aren't a series so stories are a bit short and rushed at times but I couldn't put them down.

The River Why
A Man Called Ove
The Sisters Brothers
Blind Your Ponies
The Game of Thrones series.
Where the Crawdads Sing

I'm actually re-reading the Game of Thrones series for the 3rd time right now. Not my typical genre at all, but a friend recommended it to me a few years ago and WOW - some of the best writing ever.

Re: 2021 Book thread. - 05/25/21 11:54 AM

I’ve also read the Game of Thrones series. George R. R. Martin has quite an imagination.

Re: 2021 Book thread. - 05/25/21 12:57 PM

deerdragger -

Of your list above, I've recently read 50%, and would certainly agree with your assessment. The River Why is one of my all-time favorites (wife and I even have a dreefee box). Where the Crawdads Sing was a bit of a "chick-flick" I thought, but a good story and the writing was real good. I'll have to look for your other recommendations, although Game of Thrones isn't something that I thought I'd like. We'll see... Thanks for posting.

I think I have two books left to read in the twenty-six book Jack Reacher series that Lee Child has written since 1997. He better get busy and write some more.

I read a bunch of Patterson’s books but they became predictable and boring. Unlike Lee Child, I don’t think he had the talent or imagination to crank them out that fast. That’s probably why he hired a “co-author.”

I’m currently reading the final book in the Jason Bourne trilogy by Robert Ludlum. Some other author picked up the series and started publishing new Jason Bourne books after Ludlum’s death in 2001. I don’t think I’ll read any of those. If you don’t have enough talent or creativity to come up with your own characters you probably aren’t worth reading.

Wow, never expected to see The Sister's Brothers recommended on here. My wife made me read that one after she finished it.

For the Science Fiction fans, try David Weber, start with the Honor Harrington series and Elizabeth Moon's Vatta Wars series. For the strongly political science fiction fan, try Tom Kratman, starting with A Desert Called Peace.

And just to toot my own horn. Bayed or Treed

Ludlum was good, what I will say about the author who wrote a bunch more Bourne books as well as some others based off Ludlum's characters. . . well his books with Ludlum's characters were a heck of a lot better than the books (only tried one) he wrote on his own.

I’ve read all of Louis L’Amour books, his later books are real good.

I’ve read most of Stephen King books, until I started having bad nightmares.

I’ve read all of Tom Clansy’s books, all were great.

And lately Admiral William H McRaven’s books, his are good as well.

Not exactly a glowing review. laugh

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series (3 books) was fantastic as well.

Oh - and of course The Band of Brothers is mandatory reading. I have gobbled up a lot of WWII stuff over the years and there are some spectacular works of fiction set in that period. All the Light we Cannot See and The Book Thief are spectacular.

The Forgotten Soldier is an autobiographical novel by a guy who lived in a village on the border of France and Germany - he was drafted into the German infantry and fought on the campaigns into Russia. Fascinating the way the Germans (mis)treated their troops.
