I was looking for a slightly bigger trap than 10x10
The Sauvageau jaws don't get bends in them like the Belisle traps tend to do, but the Belisle safeties are better. I like the. Sauvageau traps better.

My go to beaver trap, more pricey than the competition but worth every cent. The newer traps have a much better safety on them.
http://pages.citenet.net/users/ctmx1010/web-content/PAGE1englishCADRE.htmlThe larger trap definitely an advantage.

The savageau is a better trap overall than the Belisle. Because of their design they can use a better metal so you don’t bend the jaws. Because of their design they have more leverage and hold the best.
Downsides-
Safeties (Belisle are the best)
Weight
Catch further back on a beaver
Cost

Nobody has mentioned the Minnesota brand 12x16. How does it stack up against the Canadian brands?

Buy the Savegeaus if you want a larger trap.
My experience with the early MB 1216’s had me selling them ASAP.

I just received a savageau 11x12 from the snare shop, 1 trap cost me $54.57 shipped
Well built and heavy duty but that price hurts.

Re: Savageau 11x12 - 01/29/21 06:07 AM
I have several dozen of the 11x12’s, a couple dozen 1216’s, and several dozen regular 330’s of various brands. If you just want to know between belisles and 11x12’s, the sauvageau are the meaner tougher, and possibly more elegant beasts for sure, but that’s not how I choose my body grip. They ALL work great. I would say the 1216’s need to be waxed - otherwise they get slow when they rust, but that’s another topic. I choose based on the run size. Fit the trap to the run. A duke 330 works as well as an 11x12 if a beaver swims through either. For underwater beaver, just use the size that fits the run. And if the run is wide enough, by all means put two 330 10”by10” side by side and catch two beaver. Don’t get worked up about brand. If duke made every size I have, and they were cheaper than the other brands of that size, I would run the dukes. Beaver don’t care. And your catch rate will not be significantly different on BEAVER. You will pick up rats in the 11x12’s that are missed with traps that don’t close fully, and that can be both good and bad depending on the situation.
With all of that said, I do appreciate a well made trap like a sauvageau. But I did not spend that kind of money because they catch better, I spent it because in my region the 11x12 size fits the most runs, and no one else makes an 11x12.
And that’s why I no longer have two dozen belisles 330’s. I found little advantage on beaver underwater over a Victor Conibear 330. So I sold the belisles, and when I need a 10x10” 330, I just grab a duke or a victor or a whatever (yes I know duke isn’t a true 10x10, but close enough...) because I’m choosing based on the size I need in that spot, not ability to catch the beaver because they all do that when used properly.
I can't wait for the border to open so I can order
You should still be able to order from dambeaver even if the border is closed. I get orders from the states still and there’s no issues.
Unless you’re planning on driving up to get them.

This guy should be their field tester for the beaver he catches.
Did you order any ?
Back in Jan your dollar was worth 1.35 conversion.
Dam Beaver supplies is a good shipping supplier, but shipping may be pricey if having to do post.

I have1/2 dozen savageau's and I do have a problem with them bending the jaws with adult beaver. I don't have this problem with my Vic's. The sava's do I nice job, I attribute the bending to the mag style springs. Was surprised to read other people's posts about them not bending seeing as this was my only issue with them
