Been trapping for years but have never had any furs tanned before, and just got back some from last season. Do you guys usually restretch them, they have seemed to shrink a little, just curious.

Yes tanned fur is re-formed(called blocking). It takes out the excess stretch in the leather, and is done after all repairs are completed.
It is done by garment manufacturers, taxidermists and anyone who wants a nice wallhanger for display.

So how is (blocking) achieved? By rehydrating, and stretching? Any tricks to it?

Look up thread. Blocking fur. #6484677. Mad beaver asks about it and boco described it in detail with a couple pics. It was written on 03/08/19.

If you rehydrate the leather it will not dry as soft as it is now. It’s alright for a wall hanger, you just wouldn’t want to do it if your going to make a hat or something out of it.

It wont affect the softness of the leather whatsoever -if it is properly tanned -just takes out the excess stretch.
When making a let out fur coat the skins are wetted and blocked several times.
