Sheet Rock Finishers ? - 09/06/20 09:26 PM

Extending a finished wall and was wondering what to do. Should I pull corner bead so I'll have sheet rock butting sheet rock or leave corner bead and have sheet rock butt corner bead? Which would be proper.easier to finish?

I think I'd pull it. They have that raised edge on them that makes it easy to finish a corner but might put a ridge in your tape and screw you up when sanding. I guess it depends on your skill level.

pull the corner bead and go rock to rock. Tape the joint. The important thing is that both pieces of sheetrock can't move later. Get something solid behind the joint.

As for skill level I reckon I'll have to sand a little more than usual. From the responses I guess I'll be pulling the corner bead. Thanks for the input fellas.

Bust off existing corner bead. Butt sheet rock to sheet rock. Fill voids with spackle. Tape with mesh tape. Then apply first coat of spackle.

Definitely pull corner bead and make a standard butt joint, i’ve always had better results nailing butt joints rather than using screws to. Mesh tape is is also better than paper on butt joints in my opinion.

Sometimes durabond 20 will do better with mesh tape. I had someone tape my basement and he used mesh with regular mud and after it was painted you can see every crack joint. A professional taper said you need to use duabond 20 or 90 if you used mesh. I have since taped my own work and the carpenter said I was better than the prior worker work. I like working with the mud.

If you can get Fiba-Fuse tape where you’re at, use it. You will thank me later. I don’t like the mesh tape on butt joints either. It’s too thick. I can finish a butt joint with a 12” knife with FF and not have to pull it out wider to hide it like with the mesh. Fiba-Fuse Is fiberglass, but it’s thin and will run in a banjo just like paper even and doesn’t float like paper so you can put a skim coat over it before it’s dry. Our Lowe’s carries it. I hang an finish 50,000 sq ft+ of drywall every year by myself. I use FF everywhere, even in my inside corners, but I roll it out with a corner roller. You might wanna use paper in your inside corners if you don’t have a corner roller.

Your other question has already been answered.

And Durabond does work better with mesh tape, but don’t use Durabond on your last skim coat. It’s harder than heck to sand.
