Seafood - 06/13/20 07:57 PM

I am looking for quality seafood. Preferably from a fisherman in the states or Canada. All I can get locally is foreign farm raised stuff. If anyone has a source I would appreciate knowing that so I may be able to order some to be shipped
Thank you

It's hit and miss. I went to Alaska figuring I would find the best seafood in the world.....everything I ordered was deep fat fried. Best thing I ate in Alaska was prime rib....probly raised by my neighbor. I'm sure it's out there, ya just gotta find it.
If you're near a Sams Club, you can get red salmon and smoke it. That's a darn good start.

What kind of seafood are you trying to find? Lets start there first.

Re: Seafood - 06/14/20 03:16 AM

A variety. Fish from Alaska shrimp from the gulf and scallops from the northeast would be a good start

Re: Seafood - 06/14/20 04:10 AM

I spent a winter in Wisconsin and surrounding states back in the late 70's. I was surprised to see that oysters were really popular. Are they still? Oysters are about them most critical seafood there is regarding the need to be fresh. There is no way I could ever get myself to eat an oyster 1500 miles from the coastline.

Re: Seafood - 06/14/20 04:14 AM

Spot prawns are one of my favorites, but they are hard to find in the lower 48. I recently found a good substitute; see if you can find the frozen, wild caught prawns from Argentina or Chile. They are really good, they actually have flavor, unlike all the farm raised prawns you will find in the grocery stores.

Re: Seafood - 06/14/20 04:27 AM

I have two grocery stores here in Montana. They get seafood delivery 2 to 3 times a week.Do you live near an Albertsons? They have a good supply of frozen and some fresh.I can get several kinds of fresh ocean fish here.It depends what the season or catch is.Ordering it online is very costly.Do you live close enough to a large supermarket?Remember fresh wild is seasonal and depends on the weather. Stay away from most everything not wild caught. That includes salmon, shrimp and all fish.Frozen is ok most of the time.Check where it comes from on the package or ask the grocer. Do not eat anything from China!

https://www.alaskagoldbrand.com

This is a good source of top quality Alaskan Seafood. This is a seafood producing co-operative, based in Sitka, and all owner/ producer sourced seafood. Essentially buying directly from the fisherman, listed prices INCLUDE shipping to your door. Bulk shipments are the best value, if you want to place a larger order, or split a larger order with family/ friends. If you are interested in placing an order, PM me, and I can get you a discount code to enter at check out, to save you a little money. As an owner/ producer, I can give out a discount code to anyone wishing to place an order. This question seems to come up pretty regularly on here, but since it is a commonly asked question, I hope this doesn't sound like self-advertising, as I believe that is prohibited on this site. If the moderators deem my reply inappropriate, feel free to remove it.

Re: Seafood - 06/14/20 04:54 AM

Thanks for your link trapped4ever.That may work for a lot of folks and it could be quite helpful.Just to show my point and not knock your post.I bought some fresh halibut in season right off the delivery truck at the local grocery store for $12 a pound on a sale.I saw some fresh rockfish that was $7 per lb.Didn't buy any cause I caught a bunch last fall.If you find out when the trucks come in for delivery and get it right then that's the best.Ask the grocer when they got it in or when it will be in stock.Check your local store ads and read them close for specials.Another good way to check is by law they have to put a harvest tag in with the fresh shellfish and ask the grocer to see it.It may be true of fresh fish also but not sure.

I do love to cook for people and do it all the time. Put money in the equation and it ruins it.

I grew up on the Connecticut shore line and left many years ago. Have had a couple of meals from the lobster guy. This was memorial day weekend. If you order before 10:00 A.M. eastern time it will be on your doorstep by noon the next day. [Linked Image]

I would think it would be almost as bad as milking cows. Might as well give up on the ideas like getting rich and having vacation time.

When I was land locked up in Kansas I'd get some super high quality IQF seafood from my Schwan's man. The blue jake lions are basically 2nd to none.

Way before I ever saw my first 330 I was deep into salt water and snatching stuff out of it to eat. I've not bought fish in a store, that I can remember, EVER.
By hook and crook I manage to git some.

I looked at those and used a flat top before but I is a skillet man I reckon.
I been making this here stuff the last year or so for breakfast, onions, red bells from a jar, chopped garlic, cut up potatoes, some type of sausage I have used them all mostly like Jimmy Dean for breakfast, mushroom, sometimes tomatoes, git it all right and plop some eggs on top and cover to simmer till they done.
Feeds three or 4 takes about 25 minutes.

Annual beach vacations as a child started the salt, it's deep in my bones today more so than much else, but cooking it of course.
I don't even ride boats no more, plenty to catch on the bank if you know what you doing.
This aint no bad place to spend daybreak I kinda like it.
