Momma skunk in garage

Momma skunk in garage - 05/17/20 04:14 PM

I was in my garage/shed yesterday when I heard some chattering like a baby coon. After moving some stuff I looked down by my foot and could see a tiny black and white tail sticking out from beneath an old freezer. I went and got a light and could see mommas tail kind of sticking out. They are not hurting anything but i would rather they were gone as i have some concern my dog will find them . It would seem impossible to kill them without momma spraying so I have left them alone.

Take some old meat/hot dog/bacon strip and make a trail right over to, and out the door

Or leave her alone and she will likely leave on her own. About 15 minutes ago I was pounding on my anvil, caught a motion in corner of eye and a short tail weasel with mouse in mouth scampered across open area of floor. They are good mousers as are skunk.

Or set some spray proof skink traps

About 3 hours after I found them I saw a large black snake about 15 ft from the freezer. If it finds the babies will it eat them? The babies are very small. Momma has made like a nest under the freezer.

Good luck. Buddy of mine had one in his basement a few years ago. He shot it, in the basement. A few weeks and thousands of dollars for professional cleaning and they were able to move back in. You could still smell it occasionally for a couple years. I can't believe his wife didn't kill him.

I am not going to shoot it I know that would turn out bad. I just hope the dog dont find it

Larry, the only thing that you can control at this point is your dog! I'd keep him on a short leash till momma moves her brood out of there, or you'll have stinky dog and stinky shed! They grow pretty fast, but they prolly need to be 4-5 weeks old before they go on a walkabout with momma, so keeping that dog under control is probably your only answer! Good luck, bud!

Oh yeah, I was gonna say, that black snake can be your friend. He might get her to move them before they would normally be ready to go. If he worries her enough, she may leave sooner rather than later!

Heck lee I was hoping you would show me how a death ray worked on a skunk. You can walk right up to where she's at. I just checked she's still there I can just see a small piece of her tail sticking out.

Don't believe the tale about holding a skunk up by the tail that they can't spray. You will be sorry! I have several people that kill skunks with a DR, but I ain't one of them! I kinda like how I smell normally, don't need to wear fifi ala poo!

you ought to feed her. if she has to go foraging every night she may need to spray a dog or something. then crawl back under that freezer.

If the babies are small, cage the mother, move her then just scoop up the babies by hand and release them all (or dispatch) together away from your abode somewhere secluded.

They'll pull the bag inside and shred it. I have used tar paper and zip ties to wrap a cage trap in. Before buying Kirk De'S dbl door tube traps.

And here I thought Larry was the regional skunk professor. I think he is picking our brains to see what we don’t know. I’ll let the “pole cat” out of the bag, Larry Waugh is the skunk whisperer!

Leave the car or lawn mower running

An old nylon stocking with a hand full of mothballs in it hung in the shed should get your skunks to move out. Had a rental on the edge of town and the tenant was feeding her cat in the garage and leaving the door open so the cat could get in. Skunk moved in after I had told her not to leave the door open. Hung the mothballs and the skunk was gone the next day. Then she complained about the smell of the mothballs.

A few years back I had to trap several skunks from under my front porch. Set two live traps, each with a tarp drapoed over, with the entrance uncovered. Caught both, made sure the tarp covered the whole trap, moved the trap away from the house, uncovered the trap, stuck a 22 rifle barrel behind the front leg, shot it using a 22 short.

I think I'd find where mom is going in and out at. Catch her away from the house. Bring in a couple totes to put freezer contents in. Unplug and pick up the freezer to get the the babies. Put everything back in the freezer and after it sits still a couple hours plug it back in. When the sun comes up fix whatever hole the skunk was using.

Set up a trash can with bait and ramping so it's easy for her to drop into, they can't get out, not unlike a repeating bucket mouse trap without the liquid. Slide the lid over it from a squatting position to avoid any risk of sight induced stress, relocate.

Roll some moth balls under the freezer. I bet she will take the kids and move the first night.

Ha Ha Criterdun,I release one every year from my garbage can,its beside my steps and the dum buggers fall in.
I usually find them when I toss a bag of garbage on top of them and hear them rustling around.

One year at a campground, there was a coon in the bottom of a 45 gal drum trashcan.
Good way to trap animals.

I plan on just letting her do her thing as long as she behaves. So far the dog has left her alone. The dog seldom goes in garage and momma is hid real good. With my luck as sure as I tried something it would turn out bad. I just checked and could see a baby but I couldn't see momma.

That Skunks gets her eyeball on that snake and shes having it for lunch. If I was the snake I would be the one getting out of there.

Yrs ago I came up on a baby skunk in the middle of the road. ( Wait there a song in the makings there ) I put a 50 rd box of 22 shells next to it and it was smaller than the box. Its little tail would come up but couldn't spray yet.

If the little ones are fist size or smaller you can snatch them up by the tail and they cannot spray you (body weight VS butt muscles) just don't try that when they might get a grab on something then they spray.
