Cats are not big fighters but if you have big coons that would be your worse nightmare. For cats alone a quality 14ga is fine if big coons are encountered go with the 12.5 ga nothing breaks that.

If you build cages remember you need to get that syringe into them for skunks. Love them stripes!!

I bought wire there as well. Good stuff.
Very satisfying catching critters in cages you made yourself.

Re: cage traps - 03/02/20 02:21 AM

I have found if you use bars for the door you can get by with lighter wire for the rest of the cage as coons are the ones that are hardest on the wire and with rod doors they concentrate their efforts on trying to get out though the bars and not digging into the back corners of the cages. Just be careful where you set them as they will pull everything they get ahold of in the cage with them, hay bales, mud, shingles, etc...

thanx ADC I use them mainly for cats and i have caught coons in them as well.I set them mainly where dogs may be an issue. And in places where MT. Lions are around they seem to be everywhere on my lines. I have had them drag em out 10-20 yds or so.

12.5 you can go 1x2x36 I never had a wire break with that size wire, ever.

If your going to go for cat set the trigger peddle back a bit more as cats are built different then coons.

That would work with a few adjustments

Re: cage traps - 03/03/20 03:19 AM

that would set the pan back a little and have sweet spot closer?

Re: cage traps - 03/03/20 03:23 AM

Yep just turn it around then either shorten up the rod or add more chain.

Re: cage traps - 03/03/20 03:33 AM

also easier to clean from under the pan after a catch

Bait in back won’t block the peddle also if it faces forward.
