Old FFG ad... Rabbit Raisers Wanted - 11/28/19 12:02 AM

I remember seeing the ad for years in Fur-Fish-Game, but haven't seen it in a long time.
I was wondering if anyone on here responded to the ad and what happened to the company that was promoting it.

I don't remember what the company name was for sure. I didn't realize there where several companies doing it.
I'm guessing the rabbit market tanked since they don't have ads out anymore.

Thanks Kenny k. I thought I saw them in the late '80s, but maybe my memory is messing with me.

My folks raised rabbits for sale for a few years. A guy would come by with a truck headed south and buy them. Then they up and closed their doors with no word on why. Thus they butchered the last of the rabbitry inhabitants and sold the cages. They had a 40x80 foot building full of pens.

Last ad I remember in FFG for raising rabbits was a company out of AR. I looked it into it very briefly. Profit margin seemed very low to me and start up expense very high. About 20 minutes of research and I lost all interest.

this was in the 90's

Still the same. I did it for a couple years and it was a lot of work for very little return. Got out about three years ago. Demand was high but margins were too small for the work that went into it.

I would imagine it was Pelfries out of Arkansas. Back in the 70's my uncle sold them a lot of rabbits. Got to where the bottom line wasn't feasible to sell to them like mentioned before.

I buy literal tons of rabbits a year. I pay more than probably all the other big Ohio buyers and can get more than I need. I have done the math and I don't think I could make a profit at the price I pay for rabbits, raising them. I buy mostly from show rabbit breeders, so I typically get older breeders, over production and culls. I think the only thing that keeps my producers at a profit is that they sell 4H rabbits and breeders for high prices. I don't think a large meat and fur operation can be profitable unless you sell a fair amount straight to the final consumer at a higher price, while selling excess at a near loss to a buyer.

I resell them to a company that makes petfood and food for animals at zoos.
