Henry .17 HMR

Anybody own one of these? If so what are your thoughts?

I do.Ilove the gun,I've got the Golden Boy and I have a tendancy to baby it so it hasn't got the workout it should have.Accuracy is very good,only thing I've shot with it is red squirrels,but after seeing the results of those hits I'm leary of using it on our greys.It turns those reds inside out,even the headshots are gruesome.That .17HMR is one awesome round.

I am not a gun guru. I left that up to my brother that just passed away. I am familiar with what a .22 cal LR and what .22 cal Magnum will do … so other than the size of the projectile being smaller, how does it compare to the 22's I mentioned.

17 is closer to 22 mag only flatter shooting and more affected by wind. downrange 22mag carries more energy and less affected by wind -- both are great rounds depending on what you are looking for

I challenge you to find any ballistic charts which back up the claim of the 22mag exhibiting less wind drift than the 17 HMR. You will not find it. What you will find are charts showing just the opposite, by a significant margin.
The most significant difference between the two rounds which is affected by wind drift is bullet design. 17HMR is a boat tail Spitzer. A 22mag is not.
Another difference affected by wind drift is bullet speed, 2,550 (17HMR) versus 1,900-2,000 (22mag).
In my opinion, the 17 HMR does not make the 22mag obsolete or vice versa. They both shine for different scenarios.
I am just saying that wind drift needs to be better understood when selecting either of the two rounds.

.17hmr is a very accurate round. I have owned one since they first came out in a marlin .17vs.
I use it when the leaves go down as a squirrel rifle when the shots get a little further. As a squirrel gun it is a head shot only round as that little 17 grain bullet will knock a hole through a squirrel body big enough to read a newspaper through. It's ugly.
I think it serves best as a cheaper rimfire varmint round.
I have seen video of our trapping brethren from the far north using it to dispatch larger animals(wolverine) as the small bullet does not exit and the entrance is so small. It does little damage to fur with out an exit wound.

I own and shoot them both (and love both of them) Each has their place as a tool in my tool shed-- for different reasons. I've dropped a coyote at 100yards with the .17 and dropped a crow at 250 with the .22 mag. Can't beat the laws of physics. I do try however.

Thanks for the replies. I am interested in a .17 HMR and was considering the Savage. I really like the looks of the Henry though, and lately have been thinking that may be the route I go.

The Savage is very accurate and has a very nice adjustable trigger. The only thing which I don't like is the magazine. I prefer the Ruger for the rotary magazine. It doesn't protrude so Its never in the way, and is easy to insert with your eyes closed.

I have a marlin in 17hmr. I had the choice between savage and marlin when i went to buy mine and the marlin just felt a bit better quality. Yes i know savage is accurate, but i have never held a single savage rifle that i liked how the bolt cycled or just the overall feel. They just feel cheap to me and i cant get past that. You can do a spring swap in the old marlin trigger which makes the trigger feel alot better and i think the new ones come with a newer better trigger in a knock off accu trigger style..Dont qoute me on that though. My marlin is easily capable of less than 1 moa groups with about any ammo i have tried. I shoot squirrels and rabbits with mine and its one of my favorite rifles. I know of a few deer that have been killed with neck shots from a 17hmr, not by me though. Its an accurate and deadly little round and I personally think it is strictly better than 22mag. I like hornady, cci, or federal ammo with my 17 with a 17gr ballistic tip.
