Lots of Marten are preyed upon by Owls and Hawks.

I use 1 1/2 long springs for short tailed weasels. Works like a body grip trap. I have only caught one long tail and it was white.

pcr2. Nice catches. Thanks for posting the picture. What were the sexes of the weasels? Big one a male, small one a female? Of were they both males?

No they kill them in the bush.Seen them take them before. Also find their remains stashed in bushes. [Linked Image]

Cooper's hawks are pretty gutsy, red tails and great horned owls don't fear marten.

i USE GALLON PLASTIC milk jugs with bait suspended from cap. Usually beaver. You have to set pan light. I have seen owls feeding on a muskrat, a hen pheasant in a tree and on a mink I had trapped.

What the brown longtails sell for?

Re: weasel ? w/pic - 12/17/18 12:10 PM

From a PGC download:

In Pennsylvania, most or all ermines change
from brown to white for winter, and perhaps one in six
long-tailed weasels turn white. Some least weasels undergo
the brown-to-white transformation, which is triggered
by shortening days.

Re: weasel ? w/pic - 12/17/18 01:01 PM

I caught this longtail during the CNY 6 day Fisher season, I believe it was Oct. 29th. By the end of Nov. probably would have been pure white.

pcr2, the species might have something to with when they turn white??? I think there are many variants to when they turn white... if you were to ask al gore, he probably would say "global warming". Either way nice catches and good luck with your collection of different colored weasels!

Re: weasel ? w/pic - 12/18/18 01:41 AM

[Linked Image] I use a weasel box with a #2 infront of it for the surprises, like coon fox etc. Here in my part of Pa the short tails change by Dec first to all white but I have never caught a white long tail here. I mainly use rats for bait because of our seasons on beaver being after Xmas.
