Lift up the tail, where the tail meets the body that is where the grader will measure.

You did what some call the money cut. Most the time it costs you money. Boco is correct, coon are measured to base of tail and in my humble opinion those are not skinned correctly.

The only time the measurement is not taken to the base of the tail is if the skirt is shorter. Then the measurement is taken at the shortest part of the skirt.

Boco is 100% right. Base of tail is the measurement on coon. Putting belly gurnon the back by doing the "money cut" does not get you more inches. PERIOD

How does that measure to a 4X large....which is common here in N. MN

Re: couple of big coon - 12/07/18 01:14 AM

Looks to me he pinned the legs on the back side of the board instead of wrapping then around to the belly side.

Re: couple of big coon - 12/07/18 01:26 AM

The pic on that NAFA sheet is kind of deceiving TD. Those lines next to the tail are supposed to be pleats, not slits. They are trying to show you how to pull some of the flank fur around to the back side of the board. That’s why the lines in the pic on the sheet are at an angle.

I’m afraid your Coon will be measured from the top of those slits beside the tail.

This is how I was taught and been doing coon for many years. I know, I got me a little oops on this one but other than that this is a properly skinned and boarded in my opinion. I am open to criticism. I have been putting up coon for 40 years this way and no buyer has ever said it was wrong.

Maybe not a 5x but still a big coon. Nice action! I hope you get an Andy for each of those puppies...

This guy was pretty big. I didn't worry about the fancy put up since I'm going to tan him for my wall.

Re: couple of big coon - 12/07/18 02:45 PM

On the NAFA diagram that was posted, don't assume that the tail is shorter due to the fact that fur is pulled down along side of the tail base. The tail is NOT stretched or pulled down which shortens the sides and decreases the density of the fur. The base of the tail is still the base for the bottom of the skirt, how you pin your coon will determine how you can keep the skirt as long as the base of the tail. If you pin the base of the tail as wide as you can then you don't need belly fur to make the skirt, you can use the heavier back and flank fur to do that.

36” It says it in the first sentence of the article you put on here. Measured from the nose to the shortest point. That would be the base of the tail. Still a nice coon though.
