Another Beaver question

Hey guys, I’ve noticed that after I trap out a colony of beaver, new pairs usually come in by the winter after and maintain old lodges, dams, etc. Is this common or is it just me? I was told that they usually don’t move back into a spot after a pair is trapped, but I’m starting to think otherwise. Thanks

I don’t get the numbers some guys do, I’m sure I’ll be corrected if I’m wrong. But I think you have a large population of they are moving in that quickly. It is usually a couple years before I see a pair move back in to a spot. We don’t have a huge population though, and I only trap a small part of the county.

Yes, that is common for beaver to move into a vacant pond or wherever beaver were before. Most common where water flows into that area.

If there are adjacent beaver on the drainage,and sufficient feed where the beavers have been removed,more beaver will move in as soon as they detect no fresh activity at the territorial boundary marker(castor mound).

Yep. On some drainages that I did nuisance work on, I would come in and catch the colony, then thd following spring another pair, then the next spring another pair. But as long as I got the call in early spring I could typically remove a pair and there would not be more activity untill the next spring

Good beaver habitat is a lot like prime real estate. It is not going to be unoccupied for very long if there is a decent population in the watershed.

All the new beaver have to do is a little patch work on the house, patch the dam and life is good. As long as thers food and good flow, takes about a month here. Normally 2-3 year olds.

During the off season(june to oct) it takes 6 weeks here,almost like clockwork.I go over the dates on the nuisance beaver contracts that have more than one contract issued for a particular location and it is invariably around 6 weeks for new pair of beaver to show up after a location has been cleared of all beaver.
This is in prime beaver habitat.In marginal habitat it could be one season or even 2 or 3 before beaver show up again.

It’s free housing ...and that’s the beaver cycle....it’s called job security

dad bought a 40 in 1968 and every year since there been beaver there an they have been trap out, blowing up dam ,shot and they always come back one year I took 8 beaver out in spring an by fall dam was back an beaver too

We have a strong population in our river bottoms. I have taken 35 in the last two years from the same 2 or 3 spots on a couple of pools. Makes me wonder how many dang beaver live in the area!

I have seen in the past that I would trap out a pair and the spring new ones move in .Also for what was stated also.
