College life - 06/15/18 12:39 AM

So I just moved down to Wilmington to attend UNCW next year. Just settling into the area for now.
I'm looking for a place to stay (I accidentally got a job before I got an apartment), and right now I'm looking at paying $660 a month FOR A SINGLE BEDROOM! I don't even have the whole place to myself! My parents pay less than that for a 1200 square foot house with five acres and a barn in my hometown.
I know I could find cheaper if I wasn't desperate, but this is only for a couple months.
Just had to vent. I'm griping now and I don't even have to pay tuition yet.

Oh, you're in for a treat. 660 for just a room - or bathroom and kitchen too?

How's your brother been doing?

It's got a private bath, shared kitchen.
Cody's doing great. Just got his 100 ton Captain's license, working on his 200 ton tugboat mate's license. His new tug company's sent him to the USVI, Cuba, Colombia, Mexico, Florida, Jamaica... Probably a few others. All in the past 6 months.
How about you? Got your pilot's license yet?

20 years ago I was paying $100 less for a 1 bedroom apartment that was basically in the hood....something nice would have been a few hundred more. Your probably not too far from what you can expect to pay for anything close to a city. For me, I was happy to pay a little more and not have to bother with room mates. This was after college. In undergrad I lived in dorms for a year, fraternity house 2 years, shared apartment final year. Would have been better off living alone in college too.

Anyone on here close enough to offer up space?

$660 might not be that bad depending how close you are to campus. It will suck but will be a great life experience.

Remember...you're parents probably bought that place years ago and no where near a major city.

How neat! Cody needs to hop on and let us know he's still kickin every once and again.

I got to 24 hours towards my license and have just been swamped since then. It's definitely still on my mind and do intend on finishing up.

Other than that things have been well, recently married and enjoying life and work.

So what are you going school for?

Well, I got moved in and am slowly furnishing the place with Craigslist and thrift store.
My vegan, socialist, pothead roommate is currently sitting on the couch laughing at everything and nothing at the same time, clutching a loaf of bread he's eating plain. I've seen some stoners in my day, but he takes the cake. Keeps to himself though, so fine by me.

Enjoy. Your roommate sounds harmless. You could do much worse. Have fun at college and best Wishes!

660 is about standard around a college, I go to UNCC and pay 609 and I live in a four bedroom four bath. There are probably some cheaper places, but I'd be willing to bet those are the places you don't want to be haha
