Most sold lure of all time?

Most sold lure of all time? - 04/10/18 09:56 PM

What's your guess for the ONE lure that has sold the most by volume over the years?

I have sold well over 2 tons (by weight) of my ADC's Raccoon Trail Mix bait, which I'm sure is drop in the bucket of the big time bait makers. I wouldn't be surprised if Rich Kasper has probably sold that much in a season of his predator bait. But I was curious about LURE not bait.

I'd guess Dobbin's Backbreaker is up there pretty near the top of the list.

I would guess one the Hawbakers lures would be the most sold lure. They've been around a mighty long time, and have been popular a mighty long time.

I'd go Hawbakers, Lenon's, Carman's, ???

I'll second Backbreaker as being in the top of the top ten. I know I haven't been without a bottle or two in the truck foe the last decade.

Woodchipper is probably on that list as well.

Gotta agree with Paul on Stanley Hawbakers. Red fox 100 was the first commercial lure I ever bought near 50 years ago, and after trying dozens of others it still has it's place in my pack.

The 1st commercial lure I purchased was Hawbaker Beaver Lure. Sometime in the 60s.

Absolutely no doubt Hawbakers. Not even close. Probably red fox 100 or something like that. I doubt if any other company has sold 1/10th the number of lures that Hawbakers has.

Re: Most sold lure of all time? - 04/10/18 10:59 PM

Sold the most by volume was the question.
Carmans Canine Call was around for sure in the 70s,mabe earlier.
Im certain he sold gallons, and gallons to government trappers
I bought (300) 1oz bottles at one time ,then another 150,and even more in lesser amounts.

I'm taking about ONE Lure not the entire line of lures.

Re: Most sold lure of all time? - 04/10/18 11:19 PM

Just to make a point look at it this way. In the 70s and 80s, when Hawbakers was the most popular lure, there were 20, heck maybe 40 times as many trappers as there are now. They sold tens of thousands of bottles of lure a year. It was big business back then. Lure companies that came along after 1987 haven't sold as many lures in their lifetime as Hawbakers would sell in one year back then.

No doubt in my mind the best selling lure of all time would be one of Hawbakers and my guess would be Red Fox 100 because it was one of their first lures (1930s?) and it's still used today. Another possibility would be their long distance call lure. It has also sold hundreds of thousands of bottles. Still a fantastic lure for winter canine trapping and for fisher.

My first guess was Hawbakers 100 too before I read down through the thread.

I was thinking it could be Hawbakers of some kind, but there are so many I wasn't sure if they sold a lot more one than another.

I would have to also say,Hawbakers red fox 100. That's also one heck of a good possum lure! Lol

CCC, triplde c's, carmen canine call, what ever you want to call it. But my first was Hawbaker red 100 and it worked for mink too back in the fifties, as I found out later most canine lures work for mink......jk

Re: Most sold lure of all time? - 04/11/18 12:20 AM

I would have to guess Hawbakers 100 was probably the most USED lure in history. It very well could be the most sold in volume as well.

Considering before Bill Nelson popularized the multi ingredient “call” lures with funky names...lures were much simpler and used in conjunction with bait most often. Gland lures seemed to be the most popular before Nelson.

I’ll throw another one in the mix for the more modern era...Shellfish Oil. I reckon a lot of this was sold.

I would venture a guess that 80 percent of all lure ever sold had either “Hawbaker” or “Carman” on the label though. I could be totally full of it...but like I said a guess.

Product also got sold in bulk and bottled and relabeled.
I don't know how much or who though. sleep

Amazing youns can come up with fresh topics after the years.

I don't consider it or any of the other oils as a lure. I'm sure they work as lure but I'm thinking more along the lines of a formulated mix of ingredients sold as a lure.

Still my go to lure today. If they can't smell that stuff, they have rabies, or got kilt in the road already..

Re: Most sold lure of all time? - 04/11/18 02:56 AM

Hawbakers LDC 600 would be a good guess. My grandpa put me onto that lure in the early 70's, along with Widow Maker 800. Like bermie said, there were a lot of trappers back in the 70's, using a lot of lure. I'm sure they sold a lot of beaver, coon, and muskrat #1 too, but probably more canine lures.

I started using S. Stanley's Widow Maker in the 60's. I'm thinking they sold a pile of that recipe too.

If I had to bet on it I would say Hawbakers and EJ's after that would be hard to tell. Fox Hollow and Milligan's would be high on the pole also. Man it a lot of good lure out there.

Hawbakers Wiley Red 500 -- I'll still use that lure.

Re: Most sold lure of all time? - 04/11/18 08:25 PM

I would say Hawbakers 100, Lenons fox lure was very popular at one time and I would guess lenons rat lure is at least the highest selling rat lure and up there overall. Ogormans has sold a boatload of powder river paste bait. Carman pro choice is also in the conversation

Re: Most sold lure of all time? - 04/11/18 08:38 PM

I think Hal is right, Wiley Red 500 would be my guess also...I bet Keith Winkler would know.
