I go out a few times each spring. It gives me an excuse to be in the woods before mushrooms are up.I find just as many out metal detecting. The key to success seems to be eyes down and walk.Nice finds.

We don't have a great population of deer here but I still love to get out and try to find them. Hoping we'll get some bigger ones in Illinois

Re: Any other shed hunters on here? - 03/21/18 02:36 PM

I don't get too many in my area either 5-6 decent ones a year with lots of walking. The best part of finding a nice shed for me is knowing a nice buck is still on-the-hoof.

My friends in wy found two sets from 365-370 elk and a 340 one, they still had blood on them , fell so recent

Ah well I find a couple a year. One of these days I will find a giant.

Re: Any other shed hunters on here? - 03/21/18 03:54 PM

Jw said his pair depending on spread would measure 365-70, other one his friend found same area as I hunted last fall, was 340" probably, looks bigger to me
They spotted two bulls without horns, went looking for sheds, found first pair sat, second one Sunday, other side of elk unit from where I hunted, so I probably didn't see these two, the herd bull I saw was supposed to be a 6x7 too

What do you guys do with the shed antlers you pick?

Keep them around to look at
Make stuff out of them
Sell them

Just curious.

I'm not sure about everyone else but after I get done molesting them for a day or so I throw them in a box. Been thinking about trying to make some stuff but I'm not real crafty

120lbs if they are elk at $13 a lb is what they are going for here right now you would have a good pay day.

Re: Any other shed hunters on here? - 03/21/18 11:49 PM

I found one the other day while I was zipping down the highway. Turned around, went back and picked it up. I have a pile in the corner... I am crafty, but also lazy.

All whitetails and mostly small ones. Somewhere around 75lb brown 20lb hard white 10lb chaulk and the rest were damaged got around $900. The pay for the work does not equal out on them for me.

I saw 3 decent bucks this week still holding onto both sides. I am always looking for antlers to make knife handles.

Re: Any other shed hunters on here? - 03/22/18 12:21 PM

Yea I was afraid of that pintail, last year we were a couple weeks earlier and saw 50 bucks still holding. Hopefully we'll find some this weekend. I will post some pics if we do

Re: Any other shed hunters on here? - 03/22/18 01:41 PM

picked up a few so far this winter but most are buried under snow still.
Really start pilling them up in spring and summer doing field work and haying & rotating cattle through pastures.

We start training our puppies playing with old deer sheds.
When we are out fencing and checkin cattle he is always "hunting" for them now

Re: Any other shed hunters on here? - 03/22/18 11:56 PM

I have been hunting sheds for a lot of years. I have found some but most of them are just small or even broken off pieces of an antler Here is are pictures of the most unique set I even found .The antler on the left I found in March 2013 .I spent hours trying to find the other side .Some time went by and my nephew gave me the right side .He is the property owner where I find the first one .His explanation was that his dog drug it into the yard .It is the biggest 6 point I ever seen . The dog in the pictures is my dog .I am training her to find sheds .She is just 21 months old so has just starting her second season of hunting them .The day I brought her home I gave her an antler and she does a good job of finding antlers that I plant when training her .The next few weeks will see if I am on the right track to owning a shed dog .

we do a lot of shed hunting we run about 10000 acres we guide on , went last week on our big farm 1600 acres ually pick 25 or so on that farm , someone slipped in food plots stole 6 cams on food plots and no sheds except 5 in a isolated food plot , would like to catch them so discouraging that thieves take advantage ! we picked 15 or so will start getting a lot as mushrooms start popping and turkey season rolls around.

Any tips on where to look. Went out once but didn't find anything, went to the best place I knew of.

Re: Any other shed hunters on here? - 03/23/18 04:18 PM

Some times it takes lots of area covered to find one .I normally spend 20 or more hours looking every spring .Some years I might find 2 or 3 others I find none. I have had my best success at places where they have a major trail crossing a stream or fence . But don't just look right at the crossing .Check both sides back and forth .Also thick areas where they bed or seek cover during bad weather .If I am checking those areas I wait until later because I don't want to push them out of their winter cover .Also using binos can be a help because you can scan more open fields from one spot and sometimes see one laying on the ground . The main thing is expect to cover a lot of ground to find whatever you are going to find .

Re: Any other shed hunters on here? - 03/23/18 05:19 PM

I like hunting thick cover by late season feeding areas. Find alot of them around the Fringe area edge of beans or corn by thick timber or crp. South facing Slopes or ridges always will produce some to. Found alot of big sheds on wide open hill sides with just grass that face south. They bed out in the open in a secluded area , allowing them to detect danger easily. You can walk a place multiple times and you might trip over one you never spotted, done that plenty of times in good spots.

Re: Any other shed hunters on here? - 03/23/18 05:34 PM

I agree with all you said .One year during spring gobbler season I walked an old logging road to an area I wanted to hunt .After having no luck I walked the road back to my truck and nearly stepped on a nice size 3 point antler . It was not large but it was noticeable enough that I should have seen it on my walk in . That is all the more reason why is pays to cover the same areas more than one time in the spring .

Got to our lease today around 3 and had a couple hours to look, and I found a nice 140" set and a spike. Try to post pics when I get better service

Well we had a great day today, walked 17 miles and my legs feel like jello but we found 27 sheds and 7 matched sets and biggest was 170" 14pt, hopefully I can post pics when I get better service

Re: Any other shed hunters on here? - 03/25/18 03:23 PM

A nice set my dad and I found yesterday, rough scores in the 340 range, 11 pounds each!

And my biggest deer set this year, found them two weeks apart within 200 yards of each other. Scores roughly in the high 190's

Re: Any other shed hunters on here? - 03/26/18 05:02 PM

I do not have enough deer left around here to bother looking, but 25 years or so ago I had a young buck in the yard still carrying a basket 12 point set maybe 14 inch spread at best, on May 1st.

Re: Any other shed hunters on here? - 03/26/18 06:38 PM

I've saw them as late as April 15th carrying here too, going by the trail cams most shed around Feb 10th - March 10th this year but we did jump a 160" 10pt still carrying yesterday
