Re: Trapping Work Ahead... - 01/21/18 11:48 PM

Just got back to camp a few minutes ago. Got 77 traps out today. Several are DPs at deer feeders. More than a dozen are 280s and 330s at crossovers and channels...

....tomorrow is 1st check of those and then set about 50 or 60 more.

Not as many hogs on this property as last year. I found out why yesterday. Landowner says 300 killed in past year.

Found this yesterday laying in a wash on the high bluffs along the Savannah River. A true heartbreaker!

Re: Trapping Work Ahead... - 01/25/18 02:49 AM

Thanks for taking us along on your trapline! I always enjoy seeing your pictures.

What's the deal with the hogs? Are they just getting turned into fertilizer? Seems like a guy could pick up quite a bit of pork after the landowners thin the herd. Heck, many guys here would pay to go down a shoot a few hogs.

What kind of prices do your bobcats bring in this market? Not necessarily that super spotted one, but an average 'cat?
Posted By: Swamp Wolf

Re: Trapping Work Ahead... - 01/25/18 04:53 AM

Hogs were destroying everything here. The owners of this property don't need the money. They bought this property several years ago just for hunting.

These southern cats topped at $50 last year. Averaged at $25 to 30. Groenewold Fur Co. Dried pelts.

So far that trap seems to be the one I'm gonna stay with. The non-laminated jaws are a bit rough on grey fox and coons. I will probably laminate b4 next winter just to reduce those nasty looking injuries to those two critters.

On cats and coyotes this trap is near perfect.

1 tract is 3500 acres.

The other "job" is several different tracts within .5 to .75 miles apart totalling about 2500 acres.

The 2 separate jobs are about 7 miles apart.

I do, but in another state. GA not legal to sell coon meat as the coon is listed as a furbearer and a game animal. Illegal to sell game animals.

....I've run into the same problem a time or two..

...how are those dogless Bridgers doing for you? .....I've been having an urge to get rid of some good coyote and cat traps in order to get some better ones...
Posted By: Swamp Wolf

Re: Trapping Work Ahead... - 01/28/18 04:41 AM

I'm liking the B2 dogless. I have 9 dozen out now. About half the coon and grey fox have rough feet/legs but im running mine stock except for the chains. For cats and coyotes...im very pleased with this trap and for $137 dozen....good price.

Im shortening the night latch notch, rounding off the edges of the offset jaw corners (sharp edges hurt my hands), adjust pan level with nut and bolt adjustment, and closing offset just a bit. All this takes about 8 minutes per trap.

Never thought of that. What's your theory for doing that? More catches on 'coon?

I spend about twice that much time on them! cry

I think they bed better and easier than my 550's...do you agree?
Posted By: Brett Thomas

Re: Trapping Work Ahead... - 01/28/18 07:17 PM

Not to hijack the thread but there will be 3 dozen mb650s for sell at the end of the season.
Don't know what it is about the Bridgers but they bed so fast and solid. I've been digging through traps tossing mb's to the side looking for them.

I set the trap..clamp in vice and use a hand grinder to take off a bit of each jaw face corner. This is not affecting lever lock.

Im using some of my sons 550s. They bed easy too but the B2 dogless beds easier.

I skint one out of 10 so far. About 3 or 4 more were decent but short quard hairs. The landowner has a taxidermist friend that has taken 6 so far.

See page 2 of this thread for the only one I've skint.

Had close to 5 dozen DPs out for coon, about 2 dozen bodygrips for beaver and otter, a couple beaver footholds, a few beaver snares, and about 11 dozen coyote/cat sets at peak which was about 4 or 5 days ago.
