What I am looking for is something that is easy to weed and plant. The thing is its going to be built for 2 of the sweat twins you would ever meet. By the way they are 80 years old. The garden is to hard to work on for them. If you could get me some pictures would be great. I hope its alright that I put it on this part of the fourm I didn't. Want. To go off topic on the other ones.
Thank you very much.

I make rased beds out of two high rows of cement block. The blocks are 42 in wide on the inside. you can set on the blocks and plant or weed. There is a book on it. I will try to find the bbok and post the title.

I used deck boards for mine, but the cement block idea sounds pretty cool. The idea of a seat for the older folks sounds cool.

A German is like a willow. No matter which way you bend him, he will always take root again.

I would go atleast 3 blocks high. The higher the beds are the less bending over there will be. The could also sit and do their work. The widest I would go is 4', any wider and it will be tough to reach. Cregs list is a good place to find blocks and other building material.

don't worry over the smart ones. catch the dumb ones, they pay the same.

i can do it because i dont know that i cant.

If you go more than 2 blocks high, you might have to stake the blocks to keep them from falling out.

I built some out of landscape timbers for my wife's flower beds. Stacked 3 timbers, staggered the ends like you would with bricks, augered a hole down through all 3 timbers in 2 spots on each corner (8 spots total), just each side of each corner and staked to the ground with rebar. That made it about 12 inches high if I remember. You could really easily do 6 rows like that, and it would hold together nicely. Used landscape timbers are usually available cheap, if you look hard enough. Mine are narrow since they're just for flowers, but my brother has built a LOT of raised beds in his garden, and he says that the ideal width is between 24 and 36 inches. 24 inchers for single rows of stuff like tomatoes and peppers, 36 inches for two staggered rows. You'd think you'd want to make them big to make more space, but in most cases you just end up with more dirt to mulch/weed because you don't use it all.

One thing to keep in mind, soil temperatures can get pretty high in raised beds, and they need considerably more watering than planting in flat ground.

Also, must say, I don't plant garden plants in raised beds. If I don't plant straight in the ground, I use containers like buckets or whatever suits what I'm trying to grow.

I used cedar 2 x 6's and some cedar 4x4 posts. It was a little expensive but i plann on having these around for quite a while and i also dontbhave to worry about chemicals from treated wood. I will have about 100 in one bed but should be around for 10 or so years. I use amended topsoil to fill and top off with compost. I have a watering system in place aslo so all i have to do is turn onbthebhose bib and drink a couple beers..

I made my raised beds initially by tilling my garden and then using a home made potato hook (old garden spade bent 90 degrees) to pull the bed up from the side, then would go to the other side and pull up the bed. Ended up with beds approximately 15" to 18" high and a little offer 3 feet wide. After that is a simple matter to turn them over by hand each spring with a spade as the ground isn't compacted from walking on it. Your paths will be below natural grade, it worked quite well and the cost was only my labor. Grew pole beans and pole peas around the garden perimeter on concrete reinforcing wire. Also planted a few pumpkins and trained them to the wire. The shape was perfect and had some that got to approximately 18" in diameter. Pumpkin stems are tough.
