Greetings to all
I'm wondering if anyone here has heard of or used any of these animal oils topically as liniment. Traditionally these were rendered down from the animal fat and rubbed onto the skin for rheumatism. I'm not talking about oils made for bait or scent purposes.
Some that I'm aware of that a trapper might have access to are:
Bear oil: also supposed to invigorate hair growth.
Beaver oil
Deer oil
Fox oil
Goose or Duck grease
Mink oil: used for saddles and cowboy gear. Also used for skin ailments. Supposedly, mink are the only animal that never suffers from any skin disease.
Porcupine oil
Rabbit oil
Raccoon oil
Ruffed grouse oil: a gun oil substitute
Skunk oil: has an excellent reputation for relieving rheumatism and chest congestion--use like Vicks.
Woodchuck oil: good for removing ear wax.
Years ago people used what they could make or find themselves and anecdotally some of these came highly recommended.
thank you
Jim
