Another "noise in fireplace" call. This time it's not a squirrel or raccoon. Shined my light down the chimney and this barred owl was looking back at me. Opened the fireplace damper from inside the home, and it flew up a few feet to the lower end of the flue tile. Lowered a rope form the top, past the owl, and tied a raincoat to the end. Pulled the owl up the chimney from the rooftop.

Opened the damper, but not sure I could have pulled it through the narrow gap.

It flew up to the bottom of the chimney flue tile when I opened the damper. Perfect spot, allowed me to get a rope down and tie a raincoat onto it.

Heading up. Worked perfectly.

The owl got pretty excited as it neared the top.

Low-tech tool in a high-tech world. Rope and a raincoat. Or.... how to make an owl-lifting device from ordinary items found in your truck. You can see the owl in the tree in the background.

Is that thinking outside the box or inside the chimney. Looks like it worked great.

Nice photos Ron and story! Have retrieved a couple of screech owls locally, always a nice break from the norm and the folks are always
ecstatic to see them out!

That's good thinking! I'm almost certain I would have over complicated it.

Good idea! Had one that came down an old chimney and was actually free in the basement.

Sure did. I told her it would be the perfect time to install them, as the ladders were already in place. This whole ordeal didn't begin until almost 4 PM. I finished with the caps right before dark!

I hope the gore tex still holds up to the talon grip. smile I have seen several of those in my lifetime with a few woodducks.

Just have to improvise at times. Some of our work just isn't rocket science but you do need to understand the nature of the beast and its instinctual reaction to grabbing onto something out of reflex behavior.

I am sure it appreciated the help.

Good job. And, no, there ain't enuf PPE in the world to protect you from a mad raptor - so pulling it down thru the fireplace would have been a bad idea!

I have a close friend that got on the business end of a red tail hawk a few years back while attempting to release it from a device. I tried to caution him that what he was attempting to do wouldn't be a good idea. Turns out I was right but a very hard lesson for him to learn.

He found that wrapping the bird with his lightweight jacket wasn't near enough protection for him.
