These ARA folk are ruthless in their pursuit of their programs. They have an aptitude for fascist approach to any action they agree or disagree with. Instead of quitting folks should stand up to them and show no fear or anxiety over their threats.

Deer management subcommittee members feeling threatened

FAIRFIELD -- One member of the Conservation Commission's Deer
Management Subcommittee felt so threatened by animal rights activists,
she filed a report with the police, while another committee member has
suggested a police officer is needed at the panel's next meeting in
August.

Landon Storrs, who at Tuesday's committee meeting said she is in favor
of a deer cull -- the hiring of a sharpshooter to kill deer -- went to
police headquarters Wednesday afternoon to file a report, saying she
was threatened after the meeting. The report was filed for
informational purposes, no police action was requested. She has also,
Conservation Commission Chairman Stanton Lesser said, indicated she is
resigning from the subcommittee.

At Tuesday's meeting, animal rights activists, many holding protest
signs, were vocal in their opposition to any deer hunting, often
interupting the meeting with their comments. Local resident Nancy
Rice, who is also the outreach coordinator for Friends of Animals,
said she finds the timing of Storrs' complaint suspect, coming after a
news story on an e-mail she sent to First Selectman Kenneth Flatto
calling the panel's behavior outrageous.

"They are doing this to deflect from the issue, which is they want to
kill deer in Fairfield," Rice said. "I can't let this situation, this
attack on me, move to a point of giving up efforts to stop the
killing."

She also denied making threats toward anyone. "We are a peaceful
group. We do not advocate violence in any form," Rice said.

Subcommittee member Joan Neiley believes a police presence is
necessary, saying she was frightened by the animal rights activists.

The subcommittee has taken no formal vote on what actions to recommend
to the full commission to control the town's deer population, though
most have indicated they think a combination of different efforts,
including public education, fencing, deer repellants and controlled
hunting are needed. Lesser said no decision will be made without a
public hearing.

Flatto said if there is another subcommittee meeting scheduled, having
an officer there may be necessary. "It's very rare for town meetings
to get so contentious," he said, and if anyone felt threatened,
"that's not good." It's necessary, Flatto said, to make sure that a
level of public decorum is maintained.
