Took a 4 1/2 foot bull snake out of a ladies house today. She wants me to call back w/ a quote for snake repellent and application. Snake a way seems to be the most popular product on the market. Does anybody have any experience w/ this product or maybe a better one? Thanks.

I dont have professional faith in the product. Nor have I had clear definitive results with it. It is only labeled for some specific species. It most likely was tested in a controlled environment with a significant amount of material used to determine effectiveness if any on the labeled species.

The active ingredient is basically the same for all of the product line(napthalene/sulphur)except for a few other elements. Contents of active ingredients for some named products are identical . Just have a different name.

We all get clients at times that want that peace of mind application. In this case if asked about it with respects to its effectiveness I just say it certainly cant hurt but it has its limitations and active life. Then charge and apply.

Label suggests 2-3 applications per season or more in our geographical area. The old saying goes " The customer is always right".

I have to agree with Bob J. and what he has to say about Snake-A- Way. You might want to take a look at this link. http://www.aphis.usda.gov/lpa/pubs/tn_wm...0June%202003%22

Also, the Administrator of this forum has requested that we all list our "LOCATION" in our profile.

Thanks for the replys, I kinda wondered if it was'nt more for the "peace of mind" thing. I guess if she wants to pay I'm happy to play. Just don't want to get a reputation for putting on witch doctor cures. Be up front on expectations and go from there.

Ron, I changed my profile to include location. Sorry about that.

Here is my two cents-

How did the snake get in her house. Solve that and you earned your money.

I shy away from hocus pocus since it can really make us look like an aZZ if snakes came back in the time you promised.

Change and remove their habitat, and eliminate their food supply. Deny every hole and hiding place on the property. I often find snakes harboring in underground utility boxes and in some sprinkler systems here.

Recommend good home maintenance on a regular basis. In the long I want her respect and all of her friends and families future business. But after all that sure I will go to Home Depot and get mileage and my time as a fee. But I make no warranties. \:\)

Snake-A-Way is an EPA registered repellent. That makes it a "pesticide" according to Federal law (FIFRA). If you charge for your service, or even just collect a fee for your time and mileage, and you are not a licensed pesticide applicator/operator then be sure to check in advance with your state pesticide regulatory agency about their interpretation and enforcement policies regarding repellent applications. This is one of those situations where everything goes great as long as everybody stays happy but can go expensively wrong if somebody complains and you are not properly licensed and insured.

Magic dust. Homeowners cure. I wouldn't have much faith in that stuff either. I've used it and haven't seen a bit of difference. It's like mole repellent and all that other garbage they sell to homeowners at the local garden shop. A waste of good money. But piece of mind to the homeowner, also known as "false security".

I was reading this and had to chuckle since we recently covered snake repellents.

There are no toxic baits, sprays, poisons or fumigants registered for snake control. Most repellents on the market are ineffective. University tests have shown moth balls to be completely ineffective as a deterrent. Removing debris, rocks, brush, wood piles and tall grass, which provide cover for snakes, may reduce their numbers.

Yes as we all knew this is no surprise. It is surprising that some products that have no viable effectiveness are continuing to sell and advertise as such to the public.

I sleep good at nite as I know what I sell and make actually works. Maybe I can add some moth balls to my formulas and say that this product will catch groundhogs and keep the flies from bothering the animal while in the trap. LOL

LT GREY it seems you have a flare for rhyme and poetry. Maybe we will have us a new rapper /song writer lurking in the shadows that will rise to the top of the charts soon. \:\)

You are tooooooo much.LOL

I must say you are quite talented in many areas. You might want to consider a move to Nashville. It seems you may have a promising career if you tire of wildlife work. Or make the move to New York City and make your move into the Rap/Pop industry.

Ha! Well, for now I must be on the road. With all my customers called, I got my route planned. And, thanks to Jamesons' Ultra Blend, I have several squirrels, 5 raccoons and even a skunk today. So up, up and awaaaaay............. \:\)

That comment on Dennis Ferraro is absolutely correct. He did the research on Snake-Away. His results, no effect. He is also a colleague of mine. Go Huskers!!
