Hey guys I got a chipmunk in the basement and was worndering what would be a good bait for them? I was thinking of a peanut tied to a rat trap or maybe through some into a colney trap. Not quit sure. Thanks for any help.

set the walls tight with the right sized traps like trapping rats. Nuts, seeds or corn of any kind will usually suffice in such conditions.

old school victor rat trap with sunflower seeds and peanut butter. Use the peanut butter to paste the seeds onto the lever. Some folks use a hot glue gun to stick seeds or nuts onto the lever.

Jameson neglected to tell you that he makes a very fine squirrel bait that is deadly on chipmunks! smile

a rat sized snap-e or a t-rex rat size in a rat bait station with bird seed in the bait compartments equals success. good luck.

My best Chipmunk trap is a chinese rat trap that has a suspended trigger. I use sunflower seeds in a bait bag attached to the trigger. This trap has a double spring loaded door and is lightening fast, combined with a very sensitve trigger there are no misses.

A few years back I was Guiding a German hunter for fall black bear. We up over the 5000 ft level glassing and watching over the wild blueberry thickets in a basin. Bears that time of ear are literally blue from their nose to the tip of their tail. Of course their scat are large plies of blue poo full of blueberry seeds and there was bear scat was everywhere. As we sat I was watching a Chipmunk run over and pick seeds out of the bear scat when it was joined by another chipmunk that obviously had been doing this for a while because he got right in there and climbed right on the pile and stuffed his cheek pouches right full of seeds. Of course running up and down off those piles had stained him blue. Sitting on that pile all we would have had to do was put a little red hat on him and he would have looked like Poppa Smerf running around in the brush, it was very funny.

A pebble of dry dog food with a hole drilled in the center and forced on to the prong on the old style Victor rat trap will take most chipmunks. If he is finicky smear a dab of bacon grease on the dog food tablet. Works just fine for me when the little beggars get overpopulated in my wood pile!
