So I made an off hand comment I have to back up. Went and got some PINK spray paint and painted 4 330's up to go trap a beaver or two in. Set up a beaver house that probably holds 2-2 1/2 year old beaver in it. Will check it when we get all the traps out again...hopefully Friday. Also some questions on how we trap. Most of the area we trap has a lot of lakes in it. Go to the lakes, find the beaver houses and set all the runs comming out of the house. We use a deep water stabalizer to make it quick and easy to stake. We have developed out own style of stabalizer to make it quciker and we do not have to use wire to tie them off. You can see the first picture how the traps sit in the stabalizers, those traps are ready to be set, just need to take the safeties off. A friend custom made mstabalizers to my liking and they work...well too well! Most stabalizers do not let you put the dog on the bottom beacue there is not enough room for it to fire on a 10" trap. So I had extra space put under the trap. The keeps the dog/triggers on the bottom so there is less fur damage. The beaver are also swimming closer to the bottom, so it takes less movement of the trigger to fire. On top, instead of the tiny opening I had him weld D rings, so I could put a snap link there. Entension cable is hooked onto the same snap link, and staked to a sturdy stick that is not going anywhere. A bunch of people were asking why I liked a lighter colored trap. When trapping this way, you can see your trap underwater and know weather or not it is fired by just a glance, instead of pulling the whole works up. There are two main reasons we trap this way. #1 is the area we trap has a lot of competition. We can get in and out of an area in 2 checks and take most of the beaver in a colony. There is no way to backset this, as the beaver will have to come out of the hut before they work anyone elses sets. We can also carry in just a few traps, and take the majoriy of the beaver instead of having many sets. #2 We live in Minnesota. Ice forms whenever it wants. These sets will work when there is no ice, or 3' of ice. If you set enough of these you can do the following.

Excellent Post!
Those pink belisles look goofy!! Hahah, NO doubt they'll whack and stack like the rest of your equipment!!
Good Luck to you guys, looks like fun.
Since we have zero lakes in my area, beavers use 100% bank dens, probably could use the same concept if you found their den entrances I assume?

Gave away all my secrets....Hah! Pink traps and tall stablizers are easy. The work is hard part. Getting to the hut and then carrying the beaver out are more work than about anyone wants to do!

Marble,
Those stabilizers are GENIUS!!! I'm saving those pics and I 'm going to make a few.
You should be selling those at conventions.
The coolest thing is that you can pull a beaver + the trap out and slide a new 330 down the sabilizer and go.
Good job.

jeremy T setters and beavers are alot lighter than conis and beavers so i recomend bringing in setter instead of traps
jonsnd 16 we set all huts pretty much the same and catch beaver otter and rats but we are yet to catch a mink with this type of setup
we usually expect beaver on the first check almost exclusively but some rats foul up sets and on the second check it seems more common to pick up the rats and otters
this is also a deadly technique on otters under ice, if you know they are in the pond set up any place they can get in and out of bankruns and huts. and within the first two check you should have the beavers knocked down and then sit on those sets for probably another couple 3 day checks and you should have at least one otter, it helps if you know their are fish or other minnows in the pond and if you are traping a larger (lake type) body of water apply the same set technique and wait them out once again you should pull out some otter. Creeks and fowages coming in and or out also increase your odds imensely.

Thats my partner in the pictures. They have held up pretty well so far. He got them this year anbd we have put them through a 2 week gaunlet and they still hold most of the water out with minimal patching. Wader boots and crotches will always leak, Just a matter of how much!

What did the coons weigh? Dang, I wished that we had coons that big around here. I have been coon huntin and trappin for over 40 years and the biggest that I have ever caught weighed 20.007 lbs. It sounds like 20 pounders are boring and routine in your area. 20 pounders here are rare and considered extremely large.

Marbleyes,
Great job on the beavers, You guys are one of kind, I would love to hang with you guys for a few days. I would like to see if i could extract some more tips from you guys. When you guys set up the lodge houses how do you go about removing the branches over the runs to set you traps in? Is it just hard work and you grab them and remove by hand or do you have some simpler tricks. That seams to be my trouble at some house there is alot and others it is just a few or none?

fur taker.. up on the fish hook river, i saw the biggest otter in my life,, looked like a medium sized dog...went on a summer vacation up there in park rapids. back in the late 80's...nice area and awesome fishing....

NMtrapper, Im not sure of the exact weight but furtaker got a 30.5 lb otter if I am not mistaken.
Ron, its just a lot of work at some huts. I usualy try to be the guy setting up all the traps. Stay dry that way!
Doublesettrigger, Those are better later season coon. Biggest went right around 48" on an 8" board, but never weighed it. Likely a 30+ lb coon. We weighed a few of the early coon this year and they were in the mid 20's.
JTrapper, there are select ares where you can trap like this in MN. It definatly does not work everywhere. And waders are ever evolving. Find a lot of waders that dont work, and a few that work good enough. Any of the newer ones with the armorflex or like material will hold up, but all the boot footed waders weak points are the boots.
Medic, Im sure the pink traps will stay around. Might have to take some friends out that have little girls and let the pink sets be their traps. Im back at work now, have to catch up around here before I will get many beaver sets out.

I'm not much of a beaver trapper, and I like the idea of the pink traps for visuals, but I wonder if you took it one step further. I wonder if the 330's were painted off to bright yellow, and the trigger was baited, if the yellow color would be more of an attractant to the beaver, making the 330 look like a pile of chewed sticks. Just as the pink is a visual for you, the yellow might work better as a visual for the beaver. I realize you are setting in runs, but the color change may work for a feeding station set. Maybe someone who knows better could add to this
