I set a possum job yesterday just before dark. Homeowner's little dog had a run in with a momma possum that was bigger than the dog. so I set the jobs with 7x8's to make sure I can catch the little ones I assume are with momma and a larger, raccoon trap for momma. Marshmallows for bait, Peaches and Cream lure.

On my check this morning all the all the marshmallows outside the traps are gone and most of the marshmallows inside the traps are gone too, and one of the 7x8's is sprung with nothing in it?!?

Since it was basically dark when I left I don't think it was squirrels or chipmunks taking the bait. do you think momma is trap shy and is keeping her little ones out of the trap? are possums that smart? I have a feeling I'm giving the possum too much credit, but I don't know what happened. Might set a trail cam tonight to see what is going on.

Mice. This time of year the baby's are long gone from the mama, but may well still be in the area.

Yeah, they can. Sometimes, I think they join hands and jump up and down on the trigger!

Opossums, here, give birth 12 months of the year. I wouldn't be surprised if you find "pouch 'possums" in Kansas this time of year! I have never seen a "trap shy" opossum. I have often had to remove the same opossum from a cage trap on subsequent days; when the target animal was not the opossum. Now, they only get caught twice though.

Are sure of your target animal?
could there be a raccoon working your set?
Trail camea or corn starch as a tracking powder.

Last night I added smoked oysters to the bait. This morning most of the oysters are gone, but no traps set off. I will set the trail camera tonight.
