Here is a link to a discussion on this subject from a few months ago. It also contains a link to the directive. WS Directive

What are y'all talking about? When Government Trappers fail to follow State laws on trapping dates, methods, equipmemt, legal sets, legal limits, and etc., etc., etc.? I have always believed that the Government Trappers were bound to abiding to state laws, rules, and regulations, and if they didn't it was possible/probable that they would be fired. If that's not what happens, it should be IMO in my part of the country. Adios, 45/70, RKBA!

Govt trappers don't have to follow the fur trapping dates in the states I work, (CA, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona), since they are not fur trapping, just like a nuisance trapper can set a cage trap for a racoon out of season to remove a nuisance animal as long as they are'nt taking the fur. But they do have to follow the methods, equipment, legal sets, etc.

Absolutely, same in Texas.

My understanding is they can do pretty much anything they want if they choose to. In our state they have agreed to abide by state laws but they do not have to. That is not really the problem though. They are in direct competition with private ADC companies. Should a taxpayer supported agency compete with private enterprise? They are not supposed to but that is what is happening. Dave, Remember what Bill said at the rendezvous about this. Are you working that angle? If you are I wish you luck and would like to know how it comes out. Bruce

I received a call from our local USDA trapper shortly after I began doing ADC work. He told me that since I was now in buisiness he can no longer just take cases but has to refer all callers to me and then if I do not take care of the problem he can do the work. It has worked out good for me and has gotten me quite a bit of work. Sounds like this is a rare happening for most of you guys.

I have had problems here in the past. Their sneaky and lead the clients to believe they are better than anybody else. They tell misleading stories to discredit. If the client doesn't know any better, and they get there first it can be rough to compete.
I heard the local county seat had a beaver problem.(years ago) When I inquired the city secretary told me that they only dealt with professional trappers.(usda had just been there) I could tell she had been programed. I told her I had licences in two states to build roads and bridges.Catch more beaver on right of ways than any other trapper in the state. Caught over a thousand beaver the year before, and more ways of catching a beaver than the usda. I got the job. The city manager said he had heard of me but didn't know how to contact me. (I was the county beaver trapper)
At a usda conservation meeting they even told me I couldn't come to a public meeting. Got a newspaper involved and called my senator, stopped that. Now their trying to sneak back.
Keep on plugging. Their pockets are deep.
