I have an assortment of 1.5s and many need new springs I am debating whether I should go the music wire route or just use the stock style ones in original or one size up. I had several coon pullout when they didn't drown last year and in most cases it was an old trap and the springs weren't near as strong as they should be.

I prefer the 1 1/2 music wire springs in my 1 1/2 coils. They stay stronger longer.

Depends on the trap. Some traps can't handle bigger springs without reinforcement. Most of the ones I put music wire on were ok, though I had some older victors that bowed.

Hey Liz, what method do you use to set your traps? Over your knee? I always set 1.5's with just my hands so the frame doesn't get the pressure to bend upwards in the center. You think that could be why yours bowed along with the thinner frame of course?

Lil Bit is correct. It depends on if your traps will take it. I baseplate all my 1.5s and always put #2 musics on them. These HOLD! Incidental otter in coon pocket sets....IMO well worth the time to basplate and change springs!

What size music wire springs for a Bridger 1.65?

I'd pick the #2 musics if they are baseplated. If not...1.5 musics will be your best choice IMO.

Ditto. Although, I prefer 1.5 music wires on 1.5's.

I put #2 music wire on all my #1 1/2's. Maybe a little strong at first, but they soon weaken some. I RARELY have a coon pull out.

You think that has anything do with the bending? Here's the way I do it, even the duke #11's with the extra strong springs and weak frames don't bend this way. It's not for everyone though, I'm sure....

Setting 1 1/2 coils....

Setting #11 DLS....

1: I'm pudgy, so I don't know what on earth would be pushing hard enough on the trap to make it want to bow.

2: I think that if a trap is properly reinforced, or properly constructed int hef irst place, it shouldn't bow. Thin frames with stronger-than-intended springs will bow as soona s you put the springs on it, or relatively soon after few settings.

imho.

Oh, and I can't do that, ADC. My hands aren't big enough. When I try your way, that fatty section at the base of my thumb isn't even up the arch at all. *pout*
