I have never dealt with them and i have a lady that has one that is chewing on the side of home. What would you suggest to do with this? What baits, what traps etc.?
Thanks ahead of time

beg we used to catch them down here when we where kids all the time would build a live box type trap with the top and doot built together then put one nail in the top and one in the bottom a little off set where they would clear each other but where you could put a cracked pecan between them and it would hold the top/door open then when the squirrl went to puttlin on the pecan to get it out the door would fall
The dem on the trap if i remember right is like 4 inches ouside bye 6 r 8 inches long outside
or if yours not interested in catching it live just use a vic rat trap will work also

Hello, they can be a real pest. they are most active up here at night. a box trap with sun flower seeds might work. a corn cob , peanut butter. a 110 conibear. they are active at night a light and bait and a 20 ga. with # 6 shot might be tha answer. Ed

I don't know the legal status of flying squirrels in Georgia. I don't know if you are licensed for ADC work in Georgia. But, what you describe is not normal flying squirrel behavior around here. It sounds more like gray squirrels. A small cage trap is effective for both flying squirrels and gray squirrels. Rat traps are very effective on flying squirrels. Peanut butter (or sunflower butter) and sunflower seeds are good baits for both. Exposed sunflower seeds are also attractive to seed eating birds. So, use caution if using exposed sunflower seeds and kill type traps.

Some excellent information was recently provided at Cage trapping squirrels

EDIT: Some not so useful comments too. eek

Its a flying squirrel. They have seen it and it only wakes them up during the night chewing. I am a licensed Nuisance trapper and can take them with no problem, i had just never had a call for them. I had thought about live trapping, one of my dnr friends wants one to teach children with, but if i have to use rat traps, how would you attach them to the side of the house? They are only chewing on 1 side. Thanks for all the info.

As Vinke and Bob J. said in the link "L bracket". I think that a small cage trap will get the job done if there is only one flying squirrel. You might want to consider setting two rat traps on the bracket; one facing each direction. You might also consider modifying the bracket to form a tunnel to keep the bait from being too exposed to birds. I very seldom catch only one flying squirrel at a location. Have you inspected the interior of the attic for evidence of flying squirrel habitation?

Yes, i inspected today and no sign of anything in the house, they are just chewing on the outside. This has been some very good info for me and i appreciate it all.

Have you thought about spraying that location with a repellant?

Paul, if you spray, what would you spray and could it make him go to another part of the house and start again?
Thanks
Ab

I am not sure if it is listed for this use.

But if you had a bird problem there you could spray it with Ropel, then your supper and maybe lunch would taste really bad as well depending on what time of day you sprayed.

Of course if that is legal in your state.

I think a Weasel box on location would eliminate any flying Squirrels with little risk to an incidental.

They are fond of meat and quite canabalistic. Most years I catch near 20 in cubbies guarded with a body-grip. Once they find a box and the readily available meal, I am forced to change locations.

Yep, I had a student in Northern Wisconsin catch one, while I was there, in a weasel box on the ground.

I've caught them in Sherman and weasel box on a tree limb near the damage.Use a fruit paste type bait w/seeds(nutterButter by WCS)Sun Butter w/Millet or Pumpkin seeds.
Look for a tree branch they can glide from (bark will be smooth from use).
Good Luck

I’ve trapped for flying squirrels on purpose twice. They were the target animals in residences. In both cases the squirrels were in the attic. I used modified Victor rat traps and Cmdr Greg’s critter crunch (Crunchy Peanut butter, bird seed, corn/sunflower squirrel mix. Stir it all together until it looks like oatmeal cookies before you throw them in the oven. Place enough on pan to spread out and cover it. ) I got 9 flying squirrels using this bait/trap combination. Hope this helps!!

If this one was in the house it would be easy but he is eating on the outside of the house. He hasnt been back in 3 days. Did he finally give up trying to eat into the house?

If there is birdhouse anywhere near they will be in it for sure. I pulled 16 out of a bluebird house a few years ago. The one chewing on the house may be nearby. Just a thought.

I hope you don't live in a state where you can sell those guys for pets. They bring $300 apiece.
