When skinning out your beavers, instead of makeing the cut from anus to lip, instead ,stop about at the throat area.Skin it open as usual, except from the neck up,skin that part cased. This gives you a little "hood" that fits over the top of the fleshing beam, and for me its easier to flesh that way. After fleshing ,you can finish that little cut from the neck up,then strech.

Put a string and bobber on your 330 safety and that way you won't forget to take it off after setting the trap. It also works good for finding it when you drop it in the water.

If you are using clogs or drags and the ground doesn't provide good sign for which way the animal left the set, take a 2' chunk of surveyor flagging and tie one end to a 6" nail. On the other end crimp on a split shot fishing sinker. When you make your set and place you drag, pound the nail into the ground and wrap the flagging LOOSLEY around the drag. When the animal runs off the flagging will pull off the drag and point in the direction the animal went. The sinker keeps the wind from blowing the flagging around after it is pulled out.

Cuts down your search area by 50%.

sometimes when i know i should be getting more catches i'll thread a couple sets.just lay a couple 2-3 foot long pieces of thread on the ground around the sets.animals will usually catch thread on their feet and drag it a little ways.this tells me i need to "change up" and which direction the critters are headed.

Chicken oil is from sun rendered fat, just like fish oil. I bought a pint and it is really good stuff.

Stretching hides too wide costs you money. Find out what the proper widths for each animal you intend to trap are, then stretch accordingly. Most pelts are graded by length, with beaver being the exception to the rule.

Cooked meat grease, especially bacon works as a great pre-bait. All you have to do is save it in a jar until you get enough to go out and make some sets. Take a trap stake and drive it at a 45 / angle about 6-8" deep. Pour the hole full and leave it. If canines are in the area, it will look like a M-80 went off the next time you check it! wink

recycle your old neoprene waders. many uses on the trap line.

1) kneeling pads
2) cut a piece off the leg about 8" wide and pull up over your thigh for setting traps. Helps make your waders last longer and it's more comfortable if your using center swiveled traps.
3) cut 2"-4" strips and stretch around your pack basket or a bucket for holding things like gloves, lure, pliers.
4) bait bags
