Has anyone tried substituting the extracts you get from grocery stores for the ingredients in bait recipes? I bought some cherry and anise extract the other day and they are quite pungent. Can they be substituted for cherry and anise oil?
Thanks, Bill

the bigger bottles they sell say extract on them are a tincture, but the small little square bottles in the baking section thast say oil are the pure stuff. I've used anise oil, spearmint oil,,cherry extract, bannana extract, etc. etc. to add to a bait type base that I make,I make a couple gal of the base lure then package it in 4oz plastic jars.fun to play with and catch fur on your own stuff. Heck I've got a beaver lure that I made that has never caught a beaver because the coon come running to clog the set, so now its a coon lure.

When the Alcohol evaporates, doesn't what's left get more concentrated?

yes, some grocery store extracts will work for the average dabbler ... quite well actually ... many ingredients purchased through suppliers can be or are cut pretty thin ... that's why it's important to pick and choose where you purchase your oils etc. also taking the time to learn which oils compliment each other when mixed is very important ... just cause your list of oils/extracts sounds good and smells good individually dont always make it so when mixed ... some odors just dont play off each other have fun

Thanks guys. Got two gallons of ground carp/catfish all mixed up with the ingredients in the freezer. We'll see how the coon respond in a few weeks.

Anise extract is good for rats, coon and weasel. Peppermint is good for coon and great for rats. I have never tried wintergreen but would imagine it would work on beaver, rats, and coon. Many times I will pick some of the above extracts up at a menonite store in a small town nearby...ingredients seem purer and really give off better odor IMO.
