If you look at the mechanics of the 45 degree slope insures a crisp break when the dog leaves the notch.
Also if you short notch the pan or have a short notch in the night-latch method you are assured of full engagement reguardless of the level or angle the dog approaches the notch.
With the dog squared and coming in at an upward angle the bottom of the dog will hit first limiting engagement.
The first time I saw the night latch with an angle on the dog was at the NTA convention at Hutchington Ks at a gentlemans table, one look first hand the mechanics were obivious and an improvement. The gentlemans name was Charles Dobbins.
