What did you do to the end of the dog? You need to file it too. I file mine at an angle.

yeah i have problems with this but i think i figured it out you need to make the second notch a little shallower as the arc of the dog wont catch on some thing that deep. also sqare up your dog tops. i did mine with a dremel though.....

What difference does it make if the dog is filed at an angle or flush?

With the dog filed at an angle you reduce any drag and get a nice crisp fire.

If you look at the mechanics of the 45 degree slope insures a crisp break when the dog leaves the notch.

Also if you short notch the pan or have a short notch in the night-latch method you are assured of full engagement reguardless of the level or angle the dog approaches the notch.

With the dog squared and coming in at an upward angle the bottom of the dog will hit first limiting engagement.

The first time I saw the night latch with an angle on the dog was at the NTA convention at Hutchington Ks at a gentlemans table, one look first hand the mechanics were obivious and an improvement. The gentlemans name was Charles Dobbins.

It looks to me like your step is too deep in both directions. That is a pretty large jump for the dog to make and still stay set. Start small and increase as needed.

Few points, keep you PAN LEVEL, when filing.
I like to file the UNDERSIDE of my dog at a slight angle and make sure the TOP of the dog is FLAT.......sometimes there is a bump on the end.

Don't forget to close the slop out of the dog eye.

..........just checked out ADC's link, good info.
